I love SLM but I actually think that the Jean Talon Market in Montreal is better in terms of Canadian options.

Like CNN is credible on this, much less anything else?

The CNN blurb is a bit wide of reality.

Of course they had to make a reference to how cold Canada is:

"St. Lawrence's South Market also sells imported items such as tropical fruits and avocados that are not easily grown in Ontario's chilly climate"

Anyway, good publicity for the market. I also like Jean Talon better but maybe because it is a special treat since I am not in Montreal often.

Wow, can't we just accept that the list is subjective and celebrate our own for once?

besides the (IMO) well-founded hate for CNN I see no hate here. Maybe you're being a bit overly sensitive... just sayin'

I am far from a hater. Love SLM but just making a comment about a preference.

how about some reverse psychology then....

Toronto has the best negative self opinion about itself, its food scene and pretty much everything...

Please...SLM is what it is but don't imply that it's the "best" of anything. Food resources around the GTA are staggering in their variety now, far more so than what SLM has on offer. It's not all that, downtownfoodie.

sorry my bad. i'll hit the three on the list that I haven't been to yet sometime soon.

to give your previous post a more honest answer, where in the GTA is there a better collection of food purveyors than SLM? I don't mean farmer's markets where there is great local fruit and veg, but full-service, one-stop shops?

Good on SLM, but I'm shocked that the Ben Thanh Market in Ho Chi Minh didn't make the list. It's absolutely mammoth with more food, raw and prepped, than you could shake a gigantic stick, provided you could find a gigantic stick and were strong enough to shake it.

Visited it a few years ago, and spent a blissed-out afternoon wandering through, ordering food randomly from different stalls. Absolutely amazing place and best market I've seen on the planet.

SLM is what is is....a very nice farmers market. I wouldn't call it world class but when in TO I love to make a visit especially in August when the bulk of fruit and veg are in full throttle.

There are markets in major centers all over the world. Certainly Ben Thanh Market in Saigon is amazing but there are amazing markets in every major Vietnamese city that make SLM seem simple and small. Every community/suburb has a market like all over the world. You just have to travel to see how limited we are. Buenos Aeries/Santiago/Montivideo central market areas make SLM seem small and deprived. For TO/Canada SLM is a wonderful market but certainly nowhere close to being in the worlds top 10!

We're not limited! We're just more civilized, dammit.
HCMC would love a Walmart or a Costco.
50 gallon drum of pho for $9.99!

The appearance in the list is not so much a tribute to SLM as it is the power of google search and CNN's minimal effort in getting some light content onto their site.

To give CNN some credit, the article is actually titled "10 of the world's best fresh markets".

I don't see any claim that they are "THE" 10 best fresh markets in the world.

There is no explanation of ranking or criteria, so really, this is just an arbitrary list of markets currently found on planet earth.

No hatin' on SLM. It's a market with much to enjoy and recommend, though I will say I enjoy Kensington more these days.
