As a South Ender, I am very excited by the prospect of a WF coming. The current nearby options are the tiny TJs on Boylston, Stop & Shop in Dorchester, the robber baron Shaws on Huntington, the tiny WFs at Symphony or the overpriced Foodie's. Wegman's would definitely be the best, but since that isn't happening I will take a WF any day.

I'm a bit at a loss to understand why folks feel that Wegman's would be better. I shop frequently at the Northborough Wegman's, as it is smack on my commute home from Worcester to Waltham. Yes, it is *much* better than a Shaw's or Stop&Shop, but I still prefer WF. Prices are not much better, and produce selection (particularly for organics) are still better at WF. Most of the fruit I have purchased at Wegman's has been off and had to be returned, (not rotten, but sour/fermented tasting). This has happened on three occasions, so I've sort of given up on fruit there. The cheese department is the only thing that has an edge on WF, with a broader selection than the WF in Newton (Washington Street) that I usually go to. But WF has more varieties of flours and other organic staples as well, compared to Wegman's. Pricewise, they are pretty much identical in the long run.

Sure, Wegman's would be better, but I certainly welcome a Whole Foods in that corner of the South End. Likely a couple of years away, though.
