For lovers of Cupid's Hot Dogs... GREAT news!!!

On Sunday, I was everywhere. And, yes, Cupid's on Vanowen and Winnetka in Canoga Park was one of the places. As I was waiting for my order, I saw something that made me look twice, read it again a third, and tell the poor young, shocked guy working there to "shut up!". Yes, how RUDE! But you see, I have been sad about the closure of my first chili dog love - namely, the Cupid's Hot Dog location that used to be across the street from my lifelong church on the corner of Tyrone and Victory in Van Nuys. It has been gone for several years now, replaced by a (what else?) strip mall. However, that unassuming piece of paper stated, get this: Cupid's will be reopening at it's original location on Tyrone and Victory this summer. Yup, you read that right. After all these years of ORIGINAL Cupid's closing (I do not count the non-originals that sell burgers, fries, kebabs, etc. - the originals only sell chili dogs, chips and drinks) they are starting to open locations! YAY!
Once the young man realized why I had told him to shut up (when he had not even said anything!) he told me that "she" (the owner) was planning on opening more! WHAT? I asked/begged him to ask her to open one in the Pasadena/Monrovia area. He said he would tell her, although I am pretty sure he thought I was a crazed madwoman by this point.
I am so happy. Nothing has made me more sad than the loss of truly wonderful restaurants that I grew up with. Hopefully Cupid's will never need to be a distant memory for those of us who love it!!

  1. You have made me so very happy! Will it be in a space in the mini mall or on the corner like it was years ago?

;-) I even mused outloud to that poor guy "but it won't be the same" as I don't think there would be room to put a shack on that corner anymore, and then quickly decided - the hell with it! There will be another original Cupid's! Hurray!
Oh, It will be in the strip mall.

Things I learned today: WildSwede is a woman.

Yup, have always been! LOL!! ;-)

I think JG confirmed this just 5 days ago?

WS is a FAMOUS woman. Still, I don't "get" Pho79.

WOW! I didn't know I was famous! LOL!!
Once, a few years ago, Will Owen and I were at the Pasadena FM (separately and ran into each other) and JG was there. It was right before Christmas so we discussed meals eaten during the holidays. I am pretty sure he does not remember, even though Will introduced me as WS. I was feeling pretty famous until I went to my usual holiday gathering with family and friends I relayed that I met and had a nice conversation with JG and no one knew who he was, nor did they care!! Ahhh, the uneducated! HeeHee!
TonyC - it's okay. You don't have to get it. But, have you ever tried the Chargrilled Pork Pho from there? It really is good. ;-)

          1. There's one on Nordhoff and Lindley. Been going there for years!

Yep, that is the one that all my childhood best friend's brothers worked at. They ALWAYS had Cupid's sitting around! That is the one I go to the most since my hairdresser of 24 years was right around the corner. It's one of the 3 remaining (but apparently not for long!) original locations! ;-)

This is great news since I moved from Sherman Oaks a few years ago!! Darn.

Now if you can only get The Weiner Factory to re-open!!!

                1. re: LesThePress

Well, this may not be the original Weiner Factory, but a darn close facsimile!!

See my post dated September 7, 2011 and beyond in this thread: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/803286

Which is referring to this: http://www.thewien.com/

I really enjoy the dogs from this truck, and for what I order (turkey dog, mustard, chili, onions...same flavor profile as a Cupid's dog), it's pretty damn similiar to the original WF. I've heard their beef dogs are the same as well as the old WF's; they are made by the same sausage maker and have a great "snap" to them.

Les, I'd be curious to get your thoughts on this.

            2. Always good news. I was in that party of the valley (Van Nuys) a month ago and decided to stop in at the Cupid's. But it had shut down. I didn't want to make the drive to Canoga Park. But a few days later, it stuck in my head and I had to go make the pilgrimage (from Santa Monica).

Cupids was started by someone named Walsh - never met him, but knew his kids Rick and Kathy. Rick's dad wouldn't let him work at Cupid's because his hair was too long. Get that? So Rick worked with me at Smokey Joe's Pit BBQ in Tarzana. I know they sold it off sometime ago. I don't know who the new owners are - but whoever has had it the past 10 years or so must be awful. The Canoga Park locations looks sad and worn down. Depressingly sad. Maybe they sold it?

I don't know. I heard the story about 4-5 years ago (if anyone wants, they can check old posts) and I was told that Rick owned the last 3 originals (or at least the ones in Simi and Northridge). His dad (or him, can't remember) franchised it out and that is why there are some that sell additional items. The guy I spoke with on Sunday definitely indicated that the owner was female. It will be interesting to see what happens.

                1. re: WildSwede

The granddaughters of the original owner are now running Cupid's.

My bad! I guess Kathy was out, and Rick held on to it. So he's to blame for the shoddy condition.

              2. After wiener posted Cupid's website I sent an email to them (thanks w!). Within a half-hour I had a very lovely response in my inbox from Kelly Walsh who is the current owner (who along with her sister are 3rd generation owners). I told her how happy I was that they were reopening on the same corner where I had tasted my first Cupid's dog when I was a small child in the 70s. I also, selfishly I might add, requested that they consider opening one in the Pasadena/Monrovia area (where I live) and made some pretty good arguments for it, too. Well, she told me that before they found out the space in VN was available, they were looking in Pasadena. HUH!? How great is that??!! Ok, maybe not for you, but for me, it is monumental! No more driving to the valley for a great chili dog!! She said they are planning on opening more locations and Pasadena is still in the running. She mentioned that their grand opening for the VN location is slated for September 15 & 16. I plan on being there - for sure! Hope to see some of you there as well! ;-)

The new location opened early last week. I've been fairly busy so I've only been there twice since it opened, and unfortunately I missed the grand opening. Today I took a photo of my lunch. It's in the tradition, mmmmmm
