Return of Double Double Wonton House ..... in Richmond

Saw their new storefront (with opening soon signs) at Empire Centre this week. Hopefully it's the same folks & operation as the old one on Kingsway:

They had killer fried crullers (you tiao, etc) of different sorts.

My gosh, I hope that's true. We were saddened years ago when they closed down due to a kitchen fire years ago and dismayed when it was obvious they weren't coming back.

Our favourites included their chicken wings, rice in soup, and even their rice rolls. I was always amused by how they would always try upsell us, but it worked. Their chinese donuts were very good.

They had their soft opening this past Monday and we dropped by for dinner last night. Since this is a soft opening, we weren't expecting everything to be operating smoothly and that was certainly the case. Service was a little chaotic; it was obvious that for some of the servers, it was their first or second day on the job. Luckily, a number of the old staff from the original location was back. The boss lady was too busy to try to do too much upselling :) They could probably use one or two more servers to help run things more efficiently.

The menu does look expanded and they are making a point to highlight certain signature dishes, such as their you-tiao, as well as their Chiu-chow dishes.

Since it was only the two of us, we just ordered the Chiu-chow rice in soup with fish fillet and minced pork, deep fried chive dumpling (they ran out of deep fried wontons), and rice rolls stuffed with beef. A lot of the other tables order the you-tiao; we'll save that for another day.

It was quite busy as all the tables were taken and several groups were waiting outside to be seated. We were asked if we wanted to share tables and ended up being seated at a table for eight. No one else wanted to share tables, so we had the entire table for ourselves.

Food is pretty much as we remember it, so that is a good thing. Hopefully, the service will improve as the work through the soft opening. We will definitely be back.

        Great report, thx :-)

Their you-tiaos and their "ngow-li-su" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ox-tongu...) were definitely stellar ! Look fwd to checking things out in person soon.

PS: if you go back, maybe you can snap a few pics of their menu ? :-D
