August 2012 New York City Dish of the Month: Nomination Thread

Based on the success of Cookbook of the Month on the Home Cooking board, we started a new project on the San Francisco board in July: Dish of the Month. Our first dish, Asian Fried Chicken, was a great success, so we're expanding it to other boards, including New York City boards.

The idea is this: choose a 'Dish of the Month' for New York City and then collectively try as many versions of this dish as possible, reporting back with details and photos. We'll keep just one nomination thread and one voting thread here on the Manhattan board, but once the dish is chosen, we'll have reporting threads on both the Manhattan and Outer Boroughs boards, so people can put their reviews in the appropriate place.

The project should be limited to the specific month (i.e. you must eat the dish during that month—not sometime in the past—and it must be at a restaurant/shop in New York City)

The dish that gets chosen might be something very specific (minestrone soup, xiao long bao) but might also be more of a dish category (stuffed pasta dishes, Asian fried chicken). It's up to the users on this board!

I'm thinking that the criteria for choosing a dish should be that it's something readily available, but not too generic (i.e. pizza and tacos are perhaps too broad) and also affordable for most people (i.e. average cost of the single dish is less than $8)

This is the nomination thread for August 2012…you can nominate as many dishes as you want, but once we do the voting thread (which will start on July 25), it will be one vote per user.

To nominate a dish, post it in ALL CAPS in the responses below. This thread will be open until July 25.

Looking forward to getting this started, let the nominations begin!

  1. Here are a few suggestions to get this started, though I'm hoping some New York hounds will get involved. This project has been quite rewarding this month on the SF board, so I'm excited to help other hounds experience it too. Remember, you can nominate as many things as you want:

    SORBET or ITALIAN ICE

    GAZPACHO

ZHONG ZI (sticky rice wraps, discussed in a recent Best of Chowhound post): http://www.chow.com/digest/119891/chi...

    GOAT STEW

    COLD SESAME NOODLES

    1. I'd nominate:

      BACALAO

      TRES LECHES CAKE

      CUBAN SANDWICH

      2. Hiyashi chuka or cold noodle dishes in general?

That's a cool idea....sounds like good summer weather food!

        2. Will be keeping this thread open until the morning of 7/26....so this is the last chance! If you want to second a nomination, be sure to put this in CAPS as well! Voting thread will begin tomorrow, and will be announced here.

          Thanks!

            CUBAN SANDWICH!

I've been chasing good ones all over Manhattan for years.

Yes, CUBAN SANDWICH. I don't recall any threads debating the best cuban sandwich in NYC.

          2. The voting thread is up: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/860481

So go cast your votes there!
