August 2012 Boston Dish of the Month: Nomination Thread

Dave MP Jul 20, 2012 12:18 PM

Based on the success of Cookbook of the Month on the Home Cooking board, we started a new project on the San Francisco board in July: Dish of the Month. Our first dish, Asian Fried Chicken, was a great success, so we're expanding it to other boards, including Boston.

The idea is this: choose a 'Dish of the Month' for the Greater Boston Area and then collectively try as many versions of this dish as possible, reporting back with details and photos.

The project should be limited to the specific month (i.e. you must eat the dish during that month—not sometime in the past—and it must be at a restaurant/shop in the area covered by this board.

The dish that gets chosen might be something very specific (minestrone soup, xiao long bao) but might also be more of a dish category (stuffed pasta dishes, Asian fried chicken). It's up to the users on this board!

I'm thinking that the criteria for choosing a dish should be that it's something readily available, but not too generic (i.e. pizza and tacos are perhaps too broad) and also affordable for most people (i.e. average cost of the single dish is less than $8)

This is the nomination thread for August 2012…you can nominate as many dishes as you want, but once we do the voting thread (which will start on July 25), it will be one vote per user.

To nominate a dish, post it in ALL CAPS in the responses below. This thread will be open until July 25.

Looking forward to getting this started, let the nominations begin!

I think the gazpacho idea is great....there are probably enough known places that have this, but it would hopefully inspire people to try out some yet-to-be-discovered versions.

I like the ideas of falafel and eggplant parmesan as well!

I think having lobster bisque/lobster chowder as a Dish of the Month could be pretty cool....specific and accessible, but still open to interpretation. Maybe it could be any kind of soup/stew involving lobster.

Or how about "best lobster dish in the shell" and "best lobster dish out of the shell" as separate votes or monthly selections. If you just do "best lobster dish" the lobster roll discussion alone (most discussed dish on the Boston board along with burgers and pizza) would going to crowd out the pan roasted, baked stuffed, grilled, or even lobster thermidor (sort of out of the shell, but served with shell) gems that might be out there. Might even crowd out ginger scallion lobster posts too!

Love the lobster idea but $8 limit presents challenge.

Second lobster - nothing says summer in New England quite like lobster.
And if chosen, will give me the *excuse* to try the caramel lobster at Nix's Mate.

Lots of great ideas so far, but keep the nominations coming! There's no limit - and one idea might help spark others!

                  Thanks!

How about savory Asian pancakes - okonomiyaki, pajon, basic Chinese scallion pancake, etc.?
