August 2012 Toronto Dish of the Month: Nomination Thread
Based on the success of Cookbook of the Month on the Home Cooking board, we started a new project on the San Francisco board in July: Dish of the Month. Our first dish, Asian Fried Chicken, was a great success, so we're expanding it to other boards, including Ontario/Toronto.
The idea is this: choose a 'Dish of the Month' for Toronto, and then collectively try as many versions of this dish as possible, reporting back with details and photos.
The project should be limited to the specific month (i.e. you must eat the dish during that month—not sometime in the past—and it must be at a restaurant/shop in the Toronto area.)
The dish that gets chosen might be something very specific (minestrone soup, xiao long bao) but might also be more of a dish category (stuffed pasta dishes, Asian fried chicken). It's up to the users on this board!
I'm thinking that the criteria for choosing a dish should be that it's something readily available, but not too generic (i.e. pizza and tacos are perhaps too broad) and also affordable for most people (i.e. average cost of the single dish is less than $8)
This is the nomination thread for August 2012…you can nominate as many dishes as you want, but once we do the voting thread (which will start on July 25), it will be one vote per user.
To nominate a dish, post it in ALL CAPS in the responses below. This thread will be open until July 25.
Looking forward to getting this started, let the nominations begin!

A very good MARGHERITA PIZZA was to be had at Hey Lucy's on King last night, freshi Basil and a very good Mozza... They are my nominated joint...also had an emminently drinkable Mojito.
And this was at closing time. Their pizza oven is the real McCoy. Friendly staff, as well, which was refreshing.I have no connection with the place....I am an expat visiting from Bali.

GELATO- Simply Italian's passionfruit and Simply Italian's lime coriander are my current faves.
GAZPACHO- including non-tomato and tomato versions. Not sure where the best is this year, but Frank was serving an interesting one over the last couple months, and I was seeing watermelon gazpachos on a lot of menus last year.
MARGHERITA PIZZA- I've been trying different versions around TO. Pizzeria Libretto Danforth is my current favourite.

Two things I happen to be particularly obsessed with eating at the moment:
PORTUGUESE CUSTARD TARTS
PULLED PORK SANDWICHESCustard tarts are a mainstay food around here -- but by sticking to the obvious sources, are we missing any awesome ones at less talked about places?
And pulled pork sandwiches are one of the big trendy dishes of the moment. Which means there are a lot of shitty pulled pork sandwiches out there. Where are the good ones?
