Spreadable butter smells like blue cheese?

I had a tub of Land O'Lakes spreadable butter with canola oil, half the tub had already been used but haven't used it for a while, but it's been kept in the fridge and the expiration date was 8/3. Went to use it on some corn for dinner and it smelled very strongly like blue cheese, which is one food I absolutely cannot stand. The tub went straight into the trash. Seemed very strange, especially with a blended butter product. Anyone else ever experienced something like this?

  1. Sounds like it was rancid. Was there a "use within 14 days after opening" or something along those lines on it?

Nope, nothing like that. Just "best if used by date on package."

    2. I buy unsalted butter and used to keep the butter dish in a cupboard rather than the refrigerator.
Stopped doing that when I realized that unless I was using it up pretty fast, it would develop a blue cheese smell and taste. The occasional breadcrumb may have been involved but I think there were times when it happened even on a "clean" stick of butter. Sometimes a wisp of blue mold was visible on close inspection. I live alone so it would often take several weeks to go through a stick of butter.
