University City Dining Days

My daughter recently moved to UC and she wants to try some of the Dining Days Menus. She eats all types of food and asked me for recs. I was thinking Marigold Kitchen and JG Domestic for sure. Other thoughts? I'm not that familiar with UC.

  1. I would suggest only Marigold, Tria and perhaps JG. Everything is no real bargain. As residents of the area, my wife & I have looked over the options quite closely and have come to the conclusion that if you frequent the area, the deals are few and far between.

That said, please come back in a month or so to try things out. The food scene is quite robust if you're willing to roll the dice.

People say the same thing about Restaurant Week, but looking over the event menus for UCDD and the regular menus of the participating restaurants, I find that I can save money if I don't wait until the 27th.

Likewise with RW - I have found that I cannot match the fixed price by ordering ala carte without the discount.

I can get away from my local Italian (chicken or veal 10 ways) for under $30, but I almost never can dine elsewhere.with three courses or better for that kind of money.

Are you actually comparing dish for dish? Many RW menus are highly abridged. That may not be true for UCDD.

The other common issue with Center City RW is that while you may be saving a few dollars (it's rarely more than that), the experience is often less pleasurable--rushed service and often food that is not up to the restaurant's normal standard.

    2. A friend went to Distrito during this round and thought it was good and a good value.

Thanks! Somehow I missed Distrito on the list. A favorite of mine so will definitely suggest that.

From a value perspective I think Dock Street is good (salad pizza and dessert for 15). The distrito is not clear whether you get three or five dishes for 30 dollars. The latter is a good value.. 3, not so much.

Re JG Domestic, I find it has great lunch specials, and beginning to like this restaurant a lot more for lunch than dinner (though I have not been to their special snout to tail dinners).

And while we are on value, we I think the POD menu is tantamount o highway robbery. If there was one Starr restaurant that cries for a redo, it is POD.

      2. Marigold does a nice job during restaurant week.

        1. We had dinner at Distrito last night -- a great deal with 2 appetizers, 2 entrees and 1 dessert per person. We're going back next week to finish exploring the menu!

So it is five dishes.. then it is definitely worth the price. Great deal.

They're also offering 3 matching drinks for $15 -- I didn't find out about it until we were almost done but I saw my neighbors getting the first drink, a Marguerita. It was on the back of the menu with the drink list.

          2. Had a real nice meal at Grill Fish Cafe tonight. It may not be the biggest bargain at $25 (approx. regular cost of app and entre), but everything was well prepared, nice size portion and desserts were excellent (they come from Night Kitchen Bakery).
