Boardwalk Hot Dogs-Mantoloking Rd-Brick-very disappointing

We stopped here the other day for lunch. The hot dogs are homemade, I believe. We ordered one Hot Dog special, which included a hot dog, fries and med. soft drink for around $6-7.00 and one single hot dog (cannot remember the price). It was very clean inside, no sticky tables or food remnants anywhere. The place was empty and it still took at least 10 minutes for our food to arrive. The hot dogs are huge, 10-12" and fried. We are not hot dog experts but sadly, these were lacking. The skin tasted of burnt oil and the inside was just bland and mealy. They were unlike any hot dog I have ever tasted before. The roll was a very nice, crusty Italian torpedo roll, which would be great for a cheese steak or sausage sandwich but was too much bread for the hot dog. I pulled the hot dog off the bun, and tried to eat it without the bread but the taste was awful. I don't think I have ever NOT finished a hot dog in my life. The fries were nothing special, the frozen type. In conclusion, the place is very overpriced and the hot dogs need serious improvement. It is not surprising the place was empty on a Saturday at noon.

I know that I'll take some heat on this link (it's not off colored or anything). Just substitute 'Brick' for 'Chinatown'.

I went to Boardwalk Hot Dogs 2 years ago on a mini tour of hot dog joints in the area. I didn't like them either. The dogs are not homemade; they are Schickhaus which is a very good dog if fresh and prepared right. Below are my comments from when I was there:

Next up, Boardwalk Hot Dogs in Brick. Here they serve the quarter pound Schickhaus beef/pork dog. This is a quality German style frankfurter that the famous Max's in Long Branch uses. Boardwalk also offers an Italian Hot Dog (on authentic pizza bread) but they use the same Schickhaus frank. While there were many people eating Italian Hot Dogs, I feel that a mild beef/pork dog is the wrong dog. This sandwich goes much better with an all beef (preferably Best's) dog.

The regular dogs are prepared on a griddle and finished off on a grill. While I like Schickhaus franks, I didn't like my dog here. It was too dry. I like my dogs fairly well done, but this was too well done. Too much time on the grill. It also tasted bland for a Shickhaus. The roll was too big and hard for a hot dog roll. Too much bread. It would have been better suited for a meatball sandwich.

I didn't like the chili either. It tasted like the beef in beef a roni. And it was overly spicy.

Since the original owners sold out its been downhill ......they used to have a small truck on the same site before the building which was good....but now I wouldn't think of eating there after a similar experience as you described.. .. as an alternative there is a small hotdog truck on rt 88 just passed ocean county lanes parked in a small opening that serves very good dirty water dogs owners from Newark .......or try the Windmill on rt70 Brick on a Wed senior day 2 for 1..

Let me ask you this if you know the answer....are the Windmill's independently owned and operated?? I frequent the Windmill in Long Branch.....the one actually in a Windmill....and I have always been very happy with their dogs. I brought my kids with me and we stopped at the one on Rt. 70 in Brick (on the circle correct?) and I remember being being very dissapointed in the quality of my dog and I was surprised by how much the lunch for the three of us was. I generally don't pay attention to prices....but when the total was rung up I was surprised by it. (This is over a year ago so I'm a little foggy on the details). So I was wondering if the quality and prices can vary from location to location as is the case with some of these places when they are indpendently owned and operated but paying a flat fee for the name/trademark etc.

I have been to many of the Windmill locations, brick, LB, Jackson, Belmar, etc ......it could be franchised out now ....but I am sorry I cannot give you a definite answer, why not ask them next visit?........ all I know I enjoy the Windmill much better then Max's in LB......growing up in Coney Island as a kid my preference is Nathans, I then moved to Newark and enjoyed Dickie d's & Rutt's hut....at home down the shore Thuman's on the BBQ is my choice...
and yes prices are out of control all over but such is life I guess......enjoy.

Thanks for the response and I couldn't agree with you more regarding Max's. I honestly have no idea how they stay in business. Their dogs are tough as shoe leather to me....and well over priced. I have never been a fan of Max's. I will try to remember to ask them next time I stop at the Windmill.

Tapas......I think you just dug the hole deeper.....if they wouldn't ID her for 62 that would then mean that they accept that or higher as her age!?!?!?!

I say we all arrange to meet there (I'm a very "distinguished" looking 42) and we all ask for the Sr. discount and the one who get's proofed (meaning looks the least like 62) has to pay!!

Oh wait....I forgot I don't even like this place!! hahahaha

That's a shame. A homemade hotdog _should_ be better than most industrial ones. As for the torpedo roll, that sounds good to me (regular soft white bread hot dog rolls just don't cut it for me) but it sounds like a torpedo roll would be better with two hot dogs inside of it (assuming they're decent dogs to begin with).

Seems that there are a number of hot dog specialty places popping up these days. Problem with most of the ones I've been to is the less than stellar quality of the hot dogs some of them use, or places that overcook them on a grill to the point of crispy dryness..
