Great Dinner at Il Canale

My boyfriend and I went to go see To Rome With Love on Sunday night and afterward decided to go out for Italian food (naturally). I took him to Il Canale, which I have been to before, but it was my boyfriend's first time.

We had an excellent meal in a relaxed environment. We ordered a bunch of dishes and shared them. To start we got the eggplant parmesan appetizer. It was really nice and surprisingly light. This is a real Italian restaurant vs. Italian American, so the eggplant was thinly sliced and not breaded. It was layered with sauce and cheese and was just delicious. Next we shared their house salad with arugula which was lightly dressed and came with 2 different types of cheeses and olives. Really nice and refreshing.

We next shared the simple margherita pizza. Simple ingredients with great taste. The sauce was a little too thin for my taste (clearly a different sauce than what was on the eggplant) but overall it's a great pizza. The crust was slightly charred on the bottom which I like and the dough had a spectacular flavor. We finished with the spaghetti and meatballs--which was one of the best versions of the dish I've had in awhile. The meatballs (which you can also get as an appetizer) were flavorful and meaty. The waiter said they were 100% beef, which I was surprised to learn since they usually contain some element of veal or pork. They were perfectly cooked and had such an amazing flavor. The homemade pasta was cooked al dente and the sauce was filled with robust tomato flavor and included a few burst grape tomatoes.

Overall it was a great meal. Il Canale is perfect for date night---even a first date. I highly recommend it.

  1. Thanks for the review. Although I've heard of it, it's really not on my radar screen, but it sounds like it should be.

How was the movie? It's on our list, but I'm afraid to go see it because I know I'll get home and plan a trip back to Rome. ;-)

Il Canale doesn't get a ton of buzz, but it's a good restaurant.

The movie was only so-so. It was entertaining enough, but not Woody's best (certainly not as good as Midnight In Paris). The dinner was much better than the movie haha

    2. I ate there a few years ago and I thought it was really good. The owner came out to talk to us and was really friendly.

      1. Thanks for the review. It was highly recommended by someone in my Italian class but she's somehow related to the owner so it's good to get an independent review. She raved about the pizza.

        1. Ate here last night before watching the Batman flick. Tried the vongole based on your previous review as well as the Italia and Diavolo pizzas. Thought the food was good and reasonably priced. Thanks for the rec!!
