Master Chef week of 7/16 - spoiler spoiler spoiler

Monti failed as a leader, sending her team to deal with eggs 4 ways as the elimination challenge. One person from the losing team is exempt but there was no consensus. Monti nominated Felix but Josh and Becky voted for themselves, notwithstanding Becky overcooking the steak and was replaced at the grill by Josh. Felix ended up with the free pass over Josh's whining. As David Martinez watched from the safety of the gallery, he was caught rooting for Becky to fail. He hoped Becky would break her poached egg, for example. But it was the tall man who botched the omelette and softboiled egg. Josh boldly predicted the blind woman' would have a cookbook deal.

  1. I don't think "the blind woman will get a cookbook deal"..I'm hoping Frank walks away with it. I still can't stand Becky and I was hoping she would be sent home. She can't cook a softball egg..come on..as long as she keeps putting Moni down saying "she only cooks from receipes and is not a true Master Chef"..well I'm no near a master chef but my 12 year old can make a soft boiled egg. I don't like when they cook on location..most chefs cook in kitchens at not at a rodeo.

    1. Josh got screwed when Monti picked Felix for elimination, but he couldn't save himself in the elimination challenge.

I don't get the omelette in the elimination challenge. I would have failed all three for having browned their omelette. For me, browned mixed eggs is burned.

I think Christine will get a book deal even if she doesn't win. Her story is too compelling for a publisher to pass on her. Also, I believe her cookbook would outsell the rest of the contestants.

I'm with Shesallthat - I want Frank to win, he can cook, he's lovely, humble and polite, and he's easy on the eyes! Totally dig him!
        I also can't stand Becky!!!!
I liked Josh, so I was really pissed Becky prevailed...and I wanted to punch her when she walked right passed Josh when he was eliminated - not stopping to hug or console him.
Ugh, I really don't like her..
Loved it when Joe called her out for showing off a few episodes back!

        1. re: dave_c

Becky's omelette looked the most like a traditional French omelette. I can't remember if it was browned but I was pretty impressed. Looked like something from Julia Child.

          1. re: dave_c

I would have failed because I love browned eggs. :-)

          2. Bummer about Josh, I really thought he was a nice guy and I am tired of seeing backstabbing and bragging.

Agree! More cooking, and impress me with your skills and innovation, not your trash talk. And Monti, expand your vocabulary to words beyond expletives.

            2. Anyone know where they got those steaks from?

Are you serious or are you mocking the corporate sponsor? And are those people really cowboys or are they just actors on horseback?

                1. re: Worldwide Diner

                  no I am not serious

                  1. re: Worldwide Diner

"And are those people really cowboys or are they just actors on horseback?"

                    LMAO!!!

                    1. re: Worldwide Diner

The episode was filmed in Norco, California which is a major equestrian community, instead of sidewalks there are horse trails on many streets. These were not actors, just real horse people.

                      1. re: ChinoWayne

But cowboys? There are equestrians in Virgina but they're not cowboys.

                        1. re: Worldwide Diner

What, do you think the producers called up Central Casting and ordered up a 100 "cowboy types"? And then 100 actors were bused out from Hollywood, along with 100 horses and their wranglers?

There are horse lovers in this country from many different demographic groups and you don't think it is possible that California horse people, in their natural habitat would not look like cowboys? You are going to find a hell of a lot more Levi's and ten gallon hats than knee high boots and jodhpurs in this neck of the woods. Take a look at Norco's web page, right there in the image bannered across the top, a cowboy:

                          http://www.norco.ca.us/

                          1. re: ChinoWayne

Yeah, it didn't surprise me at all that they were riding Western vs. English knowing they were filming in California.

                  2. I just read JB's blog, and he accuses Becky of sabatoging Monti's team to get her sent home.

"..........I doubt if Monti ever considered Becky as a potential saboteur; she doesn't operate that way. I, for one, have been around the block a few times, and I'm reading you loud and clear, Becky. "

                    I doubt that..
Becky doesnt seem like the type of person to ever show flaws. She seems like she wants to be *perfect* all the time, so I can't see her doing poorly just in the hopes that Monti will be sent home in the elimination challenge...

                    1. re: NellyNel

I think JB is just stirring the pot. Why would Becky put herself in the elimination challenge just to sabotage Monti? The time to sabotage Monti is after a mystery box challenge.

                    2. I don't get it. When did they agree Felix should have been safe? If I were Becky or Josh I'd have stepped forward or spoken up! I can't believe that Josh was sent home but big mouth, foul mouth, chaotic mess of a leader Monti got to stay because her raw sunny side up egg tasted nice. Not only that Josh was a solid, always complimented cook (aside from the 1 dish he made that wasn't what they asked for but tasted delious) on every dish he made. Same as Christine yet all I keep hearing is Becky & Monti are strongest competitors. Really????? Monti has dumb luck & Becky hasn't been stellar everytime. I wanted Josh to win or at least make it to the top & now I don't know if I can still watch because Monti never gets kicked off! Oh & I'm the only one who finds it odd that she cries about this being her dream & being broke yet she divorced her husband, quit her job to stay home with her kid only to have $20 in the bank? At first I thought she was struggling until I realized she's a 38yo who dresses like a 20yo so she's old enough to understand if no man she needs a job!

I don't believe there was consensus as to who was exempt. I guess Felix got the exemption because she had more vote. Now, maybe Monti was playing the game because she thought Felix is a better cook than Josh. So by giving Felix immunity, she faces a weaker opponent. This is pure speculation on why Monti offered exemptio to Felix as opposed to Josh.

Actually, I don't think Monti is considered a strong competitor. I think they call know that Becky and Frank are probably the strongest, with Felix coming in 3rd?

                      2. I have to agree with Josh that Felix shouldn't have had the exemption. Sorry to see him go. Was *very* impressed to hear that Gordon said he would help Josh in any way he could, including kitchen time.

Can't believe that Becky said she didn't screw up the steaks at the cowboy cookoff. Umm, you lost 25 steaks because you overcooked them!

Frank did a great job with leading his team - especially when he thought he had picked a super team and the teams ended up being flip-flopped. He worked WITH his team and got their input into what they would cook. Looks like Stacey really did a huge part in winning it for the Blue Team with her BBQ sauce...that seemed to win most everyone over.

Rather impressed with the egg Pressure Test. I've never made a poached egg. Becky's 3-egg omelette really looked the best - but I also noticed she was the only one who tri-folded it the way I've see Julia Child plate it. Would that have made a difference?

Monti seems to squeak by a lot, but pulls through in Pressure Tests. I doubt she'll win. I'm still thinking it'll be Becky vs. Frank. He's proving himself more and more, including on the 7/17 episode, which I'm watching now.

P.S. The over-exaggerated drawl from Paula Deen was a bit much. No, a lot much. :-/

all their gushing over Paula Deen made me ill. If it were me up there I think I'd be rolling my eyes. And I guess I show my age by being irritated by "Shut Up" and "Shut Your Mouth" as being appropriate expressions of amazement. PD's accent drives me nuts. At the very end of the second show it looks like one of the eliminated chefs will have a chance to come back; sure hope it's Josh.

                        2. Sorry to see Stacey go. I thought she had chops. REALLY sorry to see her go before David Martinez.

Frank was pretty smart in teaming up Becky and David Martinez. And yet again, Monti squeaks by having Felix as her partner. Monti did very well in just taking direction from Felix. What did Monti say - Felix made 14 pieces of sushi in 4-1/2 minutes?

If you look at the Elimination Table, Frank is in the lead with the most wins - a total of 5 (this includes team wins). Felix, Becky, and Monti are right behind him with 4, and Christine and David each have 3 wins.

                          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MasterCh...

And next week, eight eliminated contestants come back to "cook their way back into the competition." According to what I just read at TVguide.com, each eliminated contestant picks *one* item for the Mystery Box, and then they all are required to use *all* of the ingredients in the Mystery Box to cook their way back into the competition.

Ryan, the guy who called his competitors douchebags, is seen in the preview making an ass of himself, probably before the judges said the the tasting will be judged by the remaining competitors. At some point Dave is shown giving two fingers to someone. Gonna be fun!

Hahahaha I don't think I caught that. Next week is going to be funny. Any guesses on who might come back?

                              Josh? Stacey? Anna?

                              1. re: Sandwich_Sister

Just as long as it's not Ryan or Tali.

                              2. re: Worldwide Diner

It will certainly be interesting, to say the least. I can't WAIT for the taste tests from the remaining contestants. :-)

                            2. Wow.
I must say, I really enjoyed last nights episode!

I got teary eyed when I saw Christines beautiful wedding photo and Franks gorgeous daughter, but I thought Monti's hugging the photo of her son, a bit exaggerated and phoney.

Loved Christines nature when she said to Paula Deen: "Please don't make me cry again, Ma'am.

Really ejoyed the sushi challenge, and was on the edge of my seat. (Even though, I think sushi is more of an art form, rather than *cooking*)

I thought the praise of Felix and Monti was unfair, since sushi making is something Felix is familiar with.
Also, very unfair that I'm sure Christine being blind would have struggled even more than the rest, leaving Stacey to do most of the work. No wonder she got so frazzled. It's a shame she had to go because of that.

                              God, I hate Becky.
                              (is that mean?)
She was the most obnoxious we've seen her last night.
I was pretty happy Joe called her out again, and I think it's pretty clear, he see's right through her!
I really hope she is the next to go.

                              Franks a star! Love him.

Paula has posted Frank's winning dish on her website. I wanted to joke that the title was longer than the recipe, but it's a long recipe! This is a lot to pull off in 60 minutes on the fly.

                                1. re: NellyNel

Becky didn't bother me until recently. She thinks way too highly of herself and her skills, and she tends to put other people down to make herself look better.

I was routing for Josh to stay over her.

Also especially with the mystery boxes she tries to "play the game" too hard instead of just cooking her best. Remember when she didn't use the duck because she wanted to save that recipe for later? and she did it again where she omitted the most important and expensive ingredient because she said everyone was going to use it.

That was sweet about Christine's wedding photo. I'm wondering if she was not blind when she got married. If so that would be an even better photo for her to get as she has her memory to reflect on it.

I think Stacey was just really out of her element which frazzled her more than anything else. Christine is more than capable of doing all the touchy feely parts of sushi, the rice, forming the rice, rolling the sushi rolls. I think the only problem would be cutting the fish and plating.

I wonder had Stacey stayed more levelheaded and finished up if it wouldn't have been David going home for his fish cuts.

                                  1. re: Sandwich_Sister

Yeah, you are probably right about Christines skills.. I think I underestimate her based on my own skills....
I struggle with knife skills as I am!

oh, I definitely think David would have gone, but I hated when Becky said she would place the blame "sqaurely" on David....as if she had absolutely nothing to do with the poor plate of sushi! ughhhhh!!

                                    1. re: NellyNel

David was giving her bad info, like soaking the Nori, it's not rice paper.

                                      1. re: saeyedoc

Wasn't he also soaking the eggplant and isn't that also wrong?

                                        1. re: ennuisans

Yes, David was the weaker one out of the two but Becky can be a little nasty. She isn't the judges and it sounds like no matter how well or poorly a team mate does she will automatically throw them under the bus.

This also reminded me that Becky tries to play the game like it's completely based on strategic play. This is Master Chef where the judges decide, and unlike Top Chef I do think they take everything into consideration and not just the task at hand.

                                          1. re: Sandwich_Sister

As someone noted earlier, Joe called Becky out for always placing the blame on others instead of owning up to her role in a bad dish. I also think they take overall competition into consideration.

                                        2. re: saeyedoc

Ok, but the blame was not "squarely" on David...no way!

                                          1. re: NellyNel

I think if you let Becky do it all, she'd come close to Felix's version. David was just clueless about making sushi and yet he was on the side arguing with Becky and distracting her. David didn't season the sushi rice, he soaked the eggplant?!, told Becky to soak the nori, screwed up butchering the fish!? Objectively, I think Becky and Frank are the top dogs, and the only two contestants less annoying than Becky to me are Frank and Christine. David and Monti are definitely more annoying than Becky.

                                            1. re: Worldwide Diner

I agree that Becky is talented, no doubt.

But in this instance, I disagree 100% that her version would have been as good as Felix.
Monti said that Felix has sushi experience, but I did not hear anything about Becky having experience.
If she did - I am shit sure, she would have completely taken the reigns and never let the plate go out looking poorly.
She may have done a better job without David, but not in the same caliber as Felix's.

I also respectfully disagree 100%, about David and Monti being more annoying, but that of course is subjective to everyone.
(In case you havent guessed - I cant STAND Becky!) :)

                                              1. re: NellyNel

Different kind of annoying. Becky is quick to tout herself and slam her competition. Monti seems to exaggerate quite a bit and I think she's really auditioning for D list celeb status. I find David's openly rooting for Becky to fail in the egg challenge really unsportsmanlike. And I'm not sure why David would ask Becky not to throw him under the bus. Who else is she going to blame?

                                                1. re: Worldwide Diner

YES, that is it, finally, someone has hit the nail on the proverbial head. Monti comes off as she is auditioning for D list status. Perfect. I shall use that, and give you mental credit...

                                              2. re: Worldwide Diner

Agree with the annoyance factor, except it's a tie between Becky, David, and Monti.

                                        3. re: Sandwich_Sister

I honestly think it was a ridiculous challenge for everyone. Sushi takes years to learn properly, so none of them really had a chance to excel -- in which case, why bother? Sure, Felix did relatively well, but it probably wouldn't have passed muster in a restaurant, unlike the winning dishes in most other challenges.

                                      2. Was there just one episode this week or did I miss something?
