Vinnie has Marky's pegged pretty well. Unless you insisted on dining strictly kosher no matter what, Marky's was a dud through and through. It didn't seem to do anything right. A bleak, depressing joint, and overpriced to boot. Remarkable that it lasted so long.
The secret of Marky's "success"? Little or no competition. If you had to have kosher deli, you were basically a captive customer. About 20 years ago I ordered a hamburger to go and requested fried onion instead of raw onion. They charged me an extra 50cents. 20 years ago.!!
I was at Jerusalem, which is an Arabic buffet, nine years ago leading a party of four adults and four children, one of whom was a baby. I asked for a container of hot water to warm a baby bottle. I was charged fifty cents. No brains; no tip.
