unique eats circa Santa Cruz / Watsonville / Salinas
We're going to be driving from Boonville to Paso Robles, taking 101 except detouring down 1 from SF to Salinas. I want to break up the trip, so looking to spend the night somewhere around Santa Cruz / Watsonville / Salinas or conceivably further south.
Is there anything around there we can't get in Berkeley or SF besides Sri Lankan in Santa Cruz?
As far as that goes, thoughts on Pearl of the Ocean vs. Malabar?
Is there an old-school family-style Basque restaurant somewhere out there or is that further south?
re: Melanie Wong
There is a Basque restaurant in San Miguel, but not really traditional from the yelp reviews.
If you are in S Cruz area on Saturday morning, you should experience the Farmer's Mkt at Cabrillo College on Soquel, between Soquel and Aptos. Fresh kraut, cheeses, fish, mushrooms, etc. AND Accordian Man. Compare them to those from your neck of the woods.
Smoked fish tacos in Cayucos are good.
In SLO county, best bets for local food are the farmstands and farmer's markets. local oils, cheeses, meats and sausages, etc. Although Paso's is not the best. Templeton's is good, but SLO on Sat morning is the best. Or Cambria on Fri afternoon.
Hope to hear from you about your experiences.
