New World Bistro Bar (Albany)

I couldn't find a recent thread, if another hound finds it please post here or vice versa . . .

This is a thread from the General Tristate Archive Board (when they opened in 2009):

We went recently with another couple. Same excellent service, so many choices including vegan, poultry and fish. So nice to see brown rice and tofu on a menu! One of my favorite Albany restaurants. For those who are into food shows, Chef Ric Orlando won Chopped twice.

Reservations are a must. Also atmosphere can be lively - especially if your table is in the bar area (where we always seem to end up even though we have reservations).

Now on to the food:

We shared several starters (can someone tell me why their caeser salad is "sexy"?):

*Saigon street style fried calamari with cucumber noodles, peanut and chile garlic sauce. Had this before, a favorite. Reminded me of Bloomer's American Bistro (pepperocini) and Saratoga National's calamari dishes (spicy Asian flavors) which are also favorites. Cooked perfectly.

*Sweet chile tofu on a salty sweet SE Asian watermelon peanut salad - delicious, even the meat eaters enjoyed this dish and I wanted to keep it all for myself :

)

*Glazed lobster and sweetbread nuggets - Korean rice cakes, fermented black beans and ginger plum sauce reduction. I tried the lobster. Nothing was left on this plate!

I forgot what SO had. I had the Thai BBQ salmon with glazed lime, fish sauce, lemongrass and garlic dressing over mung bean sprouts, peanut slaw with brown rice and greens. The other couple had the ribs special and salmon. Salmon was cooked perfectly and our server asked how we wanted it cooked.

We had espresso and someone had dessert but I don't remember what . . .

  1. Hi FinancialDistrictResident,

    Sounds like it was Asian night for you guys at NWBB. I'm going to park going there until they come out with the Fall menu; some of the Latin dishes from the summer menu (as well as the ropa vieja) are a bit off.

    On another note, what's your best pick out of Saratoga Springs?

    All best,

    Unagi1
