Trying to Figure Out the Name of this Pizzeria Pastry

I have searched up and down under "Italian Pastries" and "Pizzeria Desserts" but my efforts haven't produced anything. My boyfriend is driving me crazy trying to remember the name of an Italian pastry that he's enjoyed in the past when he was working in a pizzeria, but he said he's seen it in many different forms. He thinks it's more common in NY. He describes it as a "stick-style" bread, almost funnel cake-like in texture and sprinkled in powdered sugar. He's seen it braided as well as solid before. Every time he tries to think of what it's called, he starts making Z sounds, but his recollection on that could be totally wrong. I'm brand new here (profile-wise), so if anyone is willing to humor me with what they think this could be, I would greatly appreciate it because it's driving me crazy!

  1. Zeppole. They're usually round and sprinkled with powdered sugar.

Well, that was easy! He screamed out in recognition when I repeated your response to him. Thank you, sir!

        You're welcome, Erinita.

He could sleep soundly now ... those will be the only 'Z sounds' you'll hear from him.
