I'm heading to Macon for a couple of weeks, and am looking for some recommendations for authentic spots, BBQ included. Anyone have any leads?

Not finding much, using "Macon". Is that because the options are limited, or because .... Found the Southern buffet, Country's BBQ, a hotdog chain, and an italian restaurant, as well as Rose Hill. None of them seem to have very enthusiastic followings.

I fear that you will be sorely disappointed if you are expecting the rural Southeast to have restaurants piled as high and deep as you are used to in San Diego.

Macon has a population around 90,000 people and probably a third are below the poverty line.

Marie, let's eat! has several entries for BBQ places in Macon.

Also, depending on where in Macon you are, it is a short trip up I-75 to Forsyth. Prime Palate on the square there has a really good Southern cooking buffet.

Since this thread seems to keep bringing lots of curious travelers to our blog, I'd like to say that we've updated it with four new Macon-area entries lately, and one of them is for Joe-Bear's and Son's Bar-B-Que, which is completely amazing.

The overall median-point for barbecue in middle Georgia disappoints me somewhat, but on the other hand, you've got Old Clinton, which is my favorite chopped pork in the state, and Joe-Bear's, which has my favorite ribs in the state, so I guess it all evens out!
