German Restaurant for Large Group?

Hi,

I'm looking for a German restaurant to have an informal memorial/life celebration in the fall for about 60-70 people? Long Island/Queens and NJ are fine as well.

So far I've contacted:

- Zum Stammtisch
- Heidelberg
- Chalet Alpina
- Helmer's in Hoboken
- Lederhosen

Does anyone have any experience with the above and/or other recommendations?

Thanks!

Laura

    Hallo frauleinlaura,

Zum Stammtisch is decent but, sadly, parking for 60-70 people will be next to impossible in that part of Glendale and public transit isn't terribly convenient around there.

Besides Long Island, what about another island? An island that's a borough—where parking is a birthright.

I'm talking of course about Staten Island!

    I had lunch here once:

It's a bit of teutonic-inflected roadside americana. Admittedly it was a while ago that I went but I at least think they ought to be able to accommodate your party.

If you go here, be sure to drive down the road through the neighborhood of Charleston. It's a trip. Feels like an old mill town in New England or the boonies of Pennsylvania. It's where they used to make yellow Kreischer bricks seen all over Brooklyn, Queens and elsewhere.

    Good luck wherever you go!

    Ciao,

    Glendale is hungry...

I've always wanted to go to Killmeyer's - it does indeed look like a real trip. Also a real trip is that website - if you click below the photo on "Explore our food menu" the prices are a bit startling - $75 for a steak, $265 for lobster, $75 for sweet honey pancakes, $75 for Thai spiced roast chicken. None of it seems particularly German at all and the prices suggest a hotel room service menu - perhaps it is. But if you click on "Food Menu" at the top of the page it opens a PDF with what looks to be he actual dinner menu for the restaurant : more standard $16 - $19 prices for the schnitzel and sauerbraten you'd expect at a German place. Funny.

Glendale is hungry is right about the parking about Zum Stammtisch.

Helmer's does not have a private room, so there is no way you could have a private party there for that many people unless you took over the whole place. The street parking by Helmer's is also a issue, but at least there are garages around Helmer's you can use. If for some reason they can accomodate you the food is good.

Heidelberg on the UES is a good choice and they should be able to give you space. Again no street parking , especially with the 2nd Avenue subway construction, but there are plenty of garages close by.

I have driven by Chalet Alpina many times, but I have never been. Nice location though.

I posted this on a different board and everyone is commenting on that menu. I think it's gotta be a mistake... $95 octopus salad? And yeah, none of it is German.

Plattduetsche Park Restaurant in Franklin Square fits the bill!
            Regards,

Plattduetsche is a great choice. Pleasant atmosphere, very good food, and it's big enough to seat 60 if you call ahead.

            Hi ratgirlagogo,

By the way, having -agogo on the end of anything automatically makes it better. Years ago, I put up signs for "Yard Sale à Go-Go" and folks showed up in droves wondering what the heck it was. Sold me some trinkets that day I did.

But yeah, Wow. I wondered if their site had been hacked but then I clicked on the "NEWS & EVENTS" tab and was introduced to the USA Patriot Act version of Lady Gaga. So, I guess their web site is...whatever that sort of thing is.

Anyway, l remember lunch there as being pretty good bratwurst and very informal. The word, "picnicky," comes to mind. Were we outdoors? Maybe. It was so long ago. The actual Lady Gaga may not even have been born that way—yet.

I wish I had something better to report but I had very lackluster dinner there awhile back. I was with a friend and his meal was meh as well. We were in the main dining room and afterwards we had a beer in the back garden where they were serving grilled brats. That looked like the way to go.

The bar adjacent to the main dining room is lovely. Beautiful woodwork.
