Onion Roll Deli - Royal Oak, MI - DTW

Jack Freeman Jul 11, 2012 09:45 PM

Say it ain't so...... drove by Onion Roll today and there is a "For Lease" sign in the window. Granted, it's been a few months since I've eaten there, but I've driven by a hundred times... when did this happen? I'm so sad. I still believe they served one of the best corned beef sandwiches in the Metro Detroit area!

This is unexpected. The place was always packed whenever I visited. The prices were not exactly bargains, so I was thinking they should be able to make bank.

Perhaps the owners tired of the grind ...

FWIW, Weekday Cafe is closing. The owners have tired of SE Mich and are relocating to the Carolina's.

I think you may have called it...I think both Alexs were tired. Last time we were there they were telling us how business has been down the last few years and how tired they were. I think they were still busy but they were supporting two families on what they made, much harder than most people realize! I truly wish them well, they are great guys! I'll miss those sandwiches!

That's terrible news...since Bread Basket seems to get worse and worse, they've been our source of deli when the cravings hit.

The sign went up a few days ago, I think. I first noticed it on Monday. Previously, there had been a closed for remodeling sign on the door.

That is really sad news, I used to enjoy taking friends and works to 'The Roll' and had not seen much of a decline at least during the lunchtime hours.

I have also been going to a place in Birmingham that has just about as good of a Reuben, it is called Stacked Deli. Guess that is where we will be heading as there are not many other places that serve a good sandwich.

I've been to Stacked twice. In my opinion, it in no way compares to Onion Roll. The atmosphere, of course, is nicer but the quality and quantity of corned beef were much better at OR!!!

I guess to each their own, but I have been several times in the past month or so and thought it was great. :- )

Nooooooooo!!! I haven't driven by in a few weeks. This is the end of the deli world -- Al's is terrible and I haven't found any other places locally that have pastrami sandwiches as luscious as Onion Roll. I know the guys were tired, but they seemed to be pushing forward. Now I'm going to be in mourning all weekend....

I think I'll be going to Hygrade Deli.

This is truly, truly sad. They will be missed. The first victim of my diet. Sorry!

WHAT??? I'll have to check it out, I'm only a mile or so from there. Bummer if it's true.

bb, I assure you, it IS true. My heart is broken in pieces. I have been craving a corned beef sandwich all week....sigh.

They were my absolute favorite. I just cannot imagine going anywhere else. :-( Dare I say it...it may be time for me to give up corned beef. Perhaps it's a sign from the food gods!

                  > give up corned beef ...

Do not quit on me. If necessary, I will lead an intervention and force you to visit Hygrade Deli. <g>

Ok....I'll take your word for it and give it a try! It doesn't seem like it should be hard to make a decent corned beef sandwich but everywhere else I have tried has been fatty or stringy or just plain not good. All the reviews on Hygrade sound great, I'll let you know when I try it. I'm sure it will be soon!!!
