Okra Wednesday at Crossroad Restaurant (Reseda)

In my quest to find good eats along 101 west of the 405, I found this little kebab/falafel place on the west side of Reseda just south of Oxnard. I'm not sure if it's new or not, but I'm not sure I've had a better lula kebab sandwich, which was good enough, but then I saw it: a hand-written sign that said "Wednesday Okra $8.99".

Well, now I'm interested! After some confusing back and forth with the very nice owner (uh, yeah, I do know what okra is), he just scooped me a sample in a little bowl. This was a garlicky beef and okra stew, the likes of which I've never tasted. Tomato based broth, whole young okra, not mushy/slimy, and seriously homemade. For all I know this may be the national dish in some Middle Eastern nation but I'd never heard of it, and don't remember ever seeing it on a menu in L.A. (called bamya/bamia?).

Other menu items looked pretty mundane, kebab plates, sandwiches, falafel, etc., but I have a feeling they might run some interesting specials. Also had a couple sodas from Israel, grape and grapefruit. Definitely worth a stop, and only a couple minutes from the freeway.
