Coach's Bar and resto.....Ocean

I see that J Michaels resto is no more. I caught a glimpse and saw the new name. Not sure if it is open.. The website would not let me click on anything so don't know. Does anyone know what is up?

  1. Well if it's anything like all the other places that have come and gone...they'll be out of business in less than a year. :)

Sadly you are correct....nothing seems to make it in that mall. It's a shame too because they did a nice job setting the place up as J. Michaels.

Let''s hope that DE makes this place a 'go'. I've been told that he's doing some renovation to a place that went through a total facelift and is practically 'new', if only to fail miserably in months. Folks, there were plenty of reasons for the prior owner's failing which I won't detail (economy doesn't help, and the location is a BEAR), but the new owner is a 'local' who owns a small shoebox bar in Deal and will more than likely make it a bar specializing in craft beers and pub grub - and he probably won't be anywhere near as stubborn as the prior owners (How can you turn down a karaoke nite (a slow Tues nite) when that one went elsewhere and is providing a 'shot' of business to where they now do it. J Michaels was a place without a solid business model. I know folks involved in it, and it went from a high end Steakhouse, Martini Bar to the final product. It was your classic case of a Sybill establishment. Wishing DE good luck as that space carries a hefty monthly overhead. He's going to need to fill those stools and tables.

Oh god please don't tell me this place is Otto's new bar.

Everything stated points in that direction.

JJ, at least give him some slack and what vision he may have and want to do.

That space is far to big to pull off a Otto's type scene there....Otto's works because it is and always has been the only game in town.....trying to pull off another sports bar type enviroment with Buffalo Wild Wings 2 miles north and all the college bars in Long Branch I don't think you can pull it off. Not at what the cost is going to be to run that place. Just my opinion I don't wish the guy any ill will.

                  I wasn't bashing...just concerned.

                  1. re: joonjoon

I hear ya both. It's a 'big monthly nut' - and with the same model, well, it's going to be tough, unless he brings in some talent into the kitchen who can put out 'solid food' (stick to the ribs, satisfying food) and draw people and get them to return.

But the biggest negative to the place will remain 'location' (i.e. highway siting) as it thas no easy entrance nor exit. You're resigned to using both jug handles to get there or return to your home. That's the BIG NO-NO when it comes to floating a food business.

At least the Mexican place, or Mike & Nelly's had back access via the adjoining neighborhood and which was patronized heavily by the 'locals' who knew. As I cited in a related post about Tommy's Coal Fired Pizza in Oakhurst when it first opened. - it is 'extreme sucker (i.e. a hassle) to get to and return home to (though it's a bit closer to the WPark jughandle than Coach's).

It's one thing for a restaurant to be on the highway, but a whole nothing thing for it to be a bar...I would not want to be caught dead leaving that lot at 2am...

After reading the comments, I looked at the Otto's website, and yes, it's Otto's new bar:

"Its official! We have purchased another business in Ocean Township, formerly named Jay Michaels. It will be a restaurant & bar and the new name is "Coach's Restaurant & Bar". We will be open anywhere from one month to three months depending on the liquor license transfer. Thank you to everyone for all your support and we look forward to seeing you soon at our second location."

Per Otto's website: "Our new business called "Coach's Restaurant & Bar" in Ocean Township, just finally got approved to get the liqour license. Our grand opening will be on December 26, 2012. We look forward to seeing you at either of our two locations!!!"

Ohhhhhh hahahahaha sorry my bad. I was driving around looking for a place to eat/watch the game last night and thought of this place but as mentioned when I passed it was closed. Figured it had fizzled out already. My bad, sorry!

            1. It is up and running and is FANTASTIC ! Beautiful place. Great choice of beers. The prices & specials are excellent! All I had yesterday, my first time there, were wings & beer. Wings were very good. Other people I spoke to were enjoying their pizza, soft pretzel, and stuffed potatos. I can walk to this place from my apt and will be a regular. Go and try for yourself. You will not be dissappointed.
