Wolf R304 range issue...help please

Hi,

I am really hoping some seasoned cooks and owners of this range or other similar gas ranges can help me out. Yesterday I was thrilled to have delivered and installed a 30" all gas Wolf range model R304. It is beautiful.

So here is the big problem or I should say I see it as a problem. Started the initial burn off for the oven as directed. (250 degrees for an hout then move to 500 degrees for an hour). The kitchen became very hot, very fast. I walked over to the unit and she was hot, hot, hot. I thought this cannot be normal. I did not have a proper surface thermometer so I used what was available, cooking, insta-read thermometer. The front of the oven door read 140 is seconds as did the sides. I could not touch the control knobs and the flat part of the front lip of the range (in front of burners and above the control knobs) read 125, it actually blistered the inside of my forearm. Many other thing heated up as well, took the house itself from 76 to 80 degrees. House is single story 2000 square feet. I honestly thought it was going to catch a fire.

So is this normal? Salesman says yes.

Does this happen with dual fuel also?

Thank you to anyone who can shed some insight, I expect that no matter what you choose to cook in will of course be warm to the touch on the outside but not this.

I can't say that I have heard anyone complain of the Wolf R304 heating up like that. I have the DF and it stays very cool. If you are having that problem, I would call Wolf. They are very responsive to their customers.

Thank you for the two above replies. I called Wolf, they were just wonderful. I had another issue come up with in the first week that may have been what caused the original issue I asked about. The seal of the oven door glass pack was broken. It had fogged up, as gas will do but never went away the liquid stayed inside. They had a service company out to me in days and replaced the glass pack. I can happily report I have had zero issues since and am completely enjoying cooking with it.

Well, currently my contractor is working on my heat problem - he said the door wasn't level with the frame - he's working with the appliance store guy. I could see it when I stepped back - the left side was lower, so it didn't seal right. Hot air was just pouring out.
Looks like it is going to work, whew. I thought I purchased the wrong range.

I am glad your contractor found the issue. I must say it is a good range and a pleasure to cook with. This evening I am doing my at home birthday tribute to Julia for her would be 100th. All French including the bread ( which by the way the crusts come out fabulous) . Bon Appetit!

You might want to measure the temperature at various external points on the range with an instant read or infra red thermometer and contact the manufacturer with your results. Also, maybe the appliance store will take back the range and you can get something else. It is sad when you get that longed for range only to be disappointed. Good luck.

I have the same model Wolf range, and just started using it this week. It is SO HOT! I just baked potatoes, and the handles for the burners got so hot I couldn't turn them. The front is hot. Hot air came out of the oven while on (I did use the convection fan).
It can't be normal to get so hot that you can't touch the plastic handles!
Let me know if you learn anything - ditto here. I thought I'd call Wolf tomorrow.

Since after the initial burn off my handles have not gotten hot. I would call Wolf. Look below for what I learned. You will enjoy this range as you go along.

Our BS gets warm; some would say hot. And the kitchen does heat up somewhat. Different manufacturers will put in different amounts of insulation to satisfy their intended clientele. But all must meet the code for fire prevention for residential use. Some just get warmer/hotter than others. I have read that some, like the Capital stay cool to the touch. You might want to look at garden web for Wolf comments.
