what are your 10 favorite cheap(less that $10) breakfast, lunch, dinner and "4th meal/snack" places

My search takes me to New York and what I assume is the hardest city yet. Also looking for some NYC staples as well: black and white cookie, delicatessen fare etc. And memorable owners are always a plus as well as some atmosphere - no divey dives.

I've recently rediscovered B & H Dairy. Love the latkes and pierogi, and their mushroom barley soup is incredibly good. It has an old-school coffee shop atmosphere, been around at least 60 years, and the bulk of the menu choices are under $10.

Is this for a book or magazine article?

You should consider going to some of the other boroughs if your budget really is that strict for all meals.

Will you be alone? Or with another person? Trying to do a pastrami sandwich at a place like Katz's will only work if you can split it with someone (it's a huge sandwich that's well over $10).

$10 (including any tax or tip) for all meals is doable but not without some amount of effort.

Try Chinatown or the East Village, to start.
