La Strada Pizza Matunuck
While visiting friends in the area we went to Matunuck and I spied the big "Brick Oven" sign in front of this place and being a big fan of woodfired za I convinced my friends to make a stop. Great little funky pizza place on the beach across from Taras Tiperrary Tavern. Not your fanciest or on a par with New Haven pizza, but if your looking for a low key beach place where you can walk in wearing sandals shorts and a T-shirt on a fine summer evening this place hits the spot. Nick the owner is a real friendly guy and they have some great signature pies the "Come to Jesus" pizza was our fave. Due to the size of the oven door they can only do 18" wood fired pies, but also have standard deck ovens inside for those wanting the large size NY style thin crust. They stess local fresh ingredients and if you're going the wood fired route the super hot oven will cook your pizza in about 2 mins. The heavily tatooed, but friendly dough tossers and funky blues/reggae tunes just add to the great anything goes summertime beach vibe. Beer and wine also available at this place.
La Strada is great - our favorite is the Jennyooo, with those delicious roasted yellow tomatoes. Though they have some competition now with Pizzeria Mezzo, which opened earlier this summer in Wakefield. Another brick oven hit, with some really fresh toppings (our favorite is the broccoli rabe with roasted garlic) and a killer antipasto plate. They're really on par, in my opinion, though Mezzo will get the edge in the off-season, when La Strada shuts down.
