Hello there chowhounds!
I am heading over to Petco Park in San Diego for the Padres vs. Cubs game. Could you please help me by pointing out some places that have GREAT food for under $70 for TWO people, not counting alcohol but including tax and tip. No Chinese, or Japanese food please. Food is the top priority and it would be nice if it were close to the stadium too. If its going to be far from the stadium, I would prefer it be on the way to the stadium from Los Angeles.
I'd recommend one of these three, all within walking distance; The Field--good pub food and friendly service; Trattoria La Strada--pretty good Italian; Aubergine--I haven't been there in a few years but they had an eclectic menu with good food. Another place that we've liked, although it may be above your price limit and we've found it to be uneven, is Chive.
For a relaxed atmosphere, outdoor seating, steps away from Petco and some pretty good food (primarily seafood), I can recommend Tin Fish (Trolley line at Gaslamp station). We had a very enjoyable meal Frin night...drincks and all ran $80 for 4 and we were happily stuffed. Nothing fancy, but good food in a nice setting
The link below is to the Downtown listings in the San Diego Reader. Anything that says "Gaslamp" will be well within walking distance of Petco Park. Anything that says "Little Italy" will be on the other side of downtown and not within walking distance.
If you find a restaurant you think you'd like to try, do a Ctrl-F search on this board and see if anyone has posted about it. Restaurants in the Gaslamp are a popular topic on this board.
I did a tour of Petco this past Saturday (great tour, $9). Concession prices are really high. $8 for a Margarita that's not even made with tequila?!?!?!? You can definitely find multiple restaurants in the Gaslamp where $70 for 2 will be more than sufficient. Given their pricing, $70 for 2 at the Petco Park concessions might be a stretch..............
This has been asked a couple times recently, so you might look through other responses. There are a lot of good places in the adjacent Gaslamp, and $70 for two will cover you just about anywhere but the most expensive places.
One recommendation I haven't seen here yet: Ventanas (700 block of 7th Ave, very close to the ballpark). Sort of Nouvelle Latin, brought to you by Candelas, which I've heard has a bit of a love-it-or-hate it reputation. Ventanas gets loud and clubby after about the 7th inning, which is either a selling point or a warning, depending on your POV.
If you don't mind walking a couple blocks further, I also like Lime (653 5th Ave.) Looks like a tequila bar, but they serve up excellent food (along the same lines as Ventanas).
PS Avoid the ballpark food. I've heard nothing but horror stories. Also, avoid McCormick & Schmicks, in the Omni. I've had the chance to eat there several times, each worse than the last. Although M&S is not a bad chain in general, the service and food here is less than awful. If you're looking for seafood, try the very reasonable Tin Fish, right next door.
