Universal Knife Block that holds a 10 incher
Hi all, I'm looking for a universal knife block capable of holding a 10 inch knife without the blade sticking out, or possibly with it only sticking out a very little.
A magnetic wall mountable knife block wont work in my kitchen, and even with those I'm a little uncomfortable with the amount of blade exposed.
The knife block would need to be able to hold about 6-8 knives. 3-4 bigger knives (chef, bread slicer), and 3-4 smaller ones (paring etc.).
It can be magnetic, or have those little flexi-rods or whatever. Just as long as it can handle big sharp knives.
Thanks a lot for your help!

Beside the flexi-rod or freedom rods, you can also get the bamboo rods one as well:

I guess you can make your own ones too:

Awhile ago, I saw this from the Wusthof website and thought it is a nice concept as well:

There are a lot of wooden knife blocks that will hold a ten inch knife without the blade sticking out. We have two Chicago Cutlery Walnut Traditions knife blocks, one that came with a set of knives many years ago and the second I bought at a thrift store for about $3. Before paying retail for a knife block I suggest stopping in at a few thrift stores.

They have slots but do have a slot at the top for the larger, longer knife and smaller knives towards the bottom. We also have a Kapoosh universal knife holder that I was fortunate enough to also buy for less than $5 at a thrift store.

We keep a cleaver and other mismatched knives in this one. We have mostly Wustofs in the Chicago Cutlery blocks.

Note that knives longer than 8 inches tend to leave some of their heels sticking out of the Kapoosh. Cleavers of just about any sort don't fit into it well if it's even close to full. And usually it's hard to cram more than 6-8 knives into one unless many of your knives are paring/utility type knives. Just a heads up.

You may have to modify a block for your knives. This on amazon.com about the Henckels 10-Slot Hardwood Knife Storage Block:
"my 2 chef's knifes did not fit the block's two large slots. blades bottomed out short of fully inserting, with about 2" to 3" of blade sticking out. i decided to open the tops of the slots to get the knives to nest properly. my trusty bosch jig saw with a hacksaw blade deepened and widened the top twoslots. then i found on the old heavy, the blade back was too thick to go all the way in the slot. more jigsawing. problems solved."
The Wusthof 8001 Under-Cabinet-Swinger Knife Storage Block might be deep enough but may have the same problem, from what one of the customers says, and all agree it's a pain to install.
