Devon - Indian food/spices recs?
Hello,
I am making my first trip up to Devon and was looking for some recommendations.
Any favorite place for Chaat (simple samosa chaat/street food)?
Any favorite place for South Indian (dosas etc..)?
Also, from the folks cooking Indian at home, is there a good store on the strip you recommend for cheap (and not old...) indian spices, rice? I need a complete re-stock.
Thanks.

There many Indian grocery stores on Devon but Patel Brothers is the biggest and in my opinion carries the widest selection of spices---2610 W Devon. Also many flours, legumes, teas etc and big cans of mango puree for making lassi or kulfi at home. At the end of the block is a big store on the corner (I think it's called Fresh Foods or something like that) that specializes in produce---even if you're not shopping for produce go in and look around as they also have a nice line of groceries. Last week I found a certain tandoori masala there that I hadn't found at Patel, so you never know.
Re eating places I will just pass this along---a few years ago I had jury duty with an Indian guy who lives up there who swore that Udupi Palace has the best dosas on the street, and I wouldn't disagree. For the all-you-can-eat lunch I am fond of Viceroy of India which, BTW, includes mango kulfi---everybody doesn't.

re: Querencia
Thank you Querencia! I wish I had seen your post before I left for Devon today, but I will follow-up on your recs for my next trip.
I went to Devon today and I was pleasantly surprised. Such good bargains. It was just so hot and I didn't want to eat a lot but had a small lunch at Khan BBQ. I just had dal and an aloo paratha but it was tasty.
I will remember Udupi Palace for my next visit, and you always need a good lunch buffet so thank you for the Viceroy rec.
I started wandering the street and saw so many smaller stores, but finally asked someone a good place to go to buy spices that is well stocked, and he also recommended Patel Brothers. I was pretty happy there, and found almost everything I wanted. I remember seeing the Fresh Farms but didn't go in. Will visit it next time as well.
How I wish I had one of those stores near me. Such bargains! I got all my spices. They were selling these large mesh bags stuffed full of fresh ginger on sale for 69 cents. Easily at my local store I would pay 10x that for the same amount. And of course, you can't beat the prices for basmati rice. I am embarrassed by what I have paid for a tiny bag of basmati rice at my local Trader Joe's!
I just wish it was easier to get to....
