Spirit to Mix w/Chai?

Sam Salmon Jul 2, 2012 08:09 PM

Any thoughts on a spirit to mix with Chai?

The tea is generally Keyhung the homemade Masala quite spicy & I thought Brandy (Paarl IIRC) would work but ended up with a thin brassy taste that didn't suit.

Rum maybe?

I'd try bourbon - it's warm and a little sweet, which seems like a good match for chai.

Something brown and "warm" -- an aged molasses-based rum, apple brandy / calvados, bourbon, or even rye.

Rum would have the advantage that you can look to pie-spice flavored ingredients like Falernum and Pimento Dram in Tiki recipes for inspiration.

I don't know anything about this product, but I was at my local shop today and saw Tiffin tea liqueur. It said it was a product of Germany (not the first place I think of when I think of tea). But it made me think of your post.

In Austria there's a tradition of making a fortified tea called Jägertee ("hunter's tea") with strong rum and sometimes kirsch. I agree with EvergreenDan that rum would be a pretty good flavor match with chai.
