Chez Joel update - June, 2012
I took the family to Chez Joel on W. Taylor near the UIC campus last week: wife, niece, nephew, and significant other. Between us we cover most concerns, from meat and potatoes to vegetarian, with stops at fish and chicken along the way. The ratatouille and tomato salad were hits, as were the steak frites and steak au poivre: The pommes frites have to be some of the best in Chicago, even better than Kiki's. My wife said the halibut was cooked perfectly, melted in the mouth but still had texture.
In the middle of the heat wave it was a pleasant evening in Little Italy, and the kids, having arrived first, elected to eat in the garden. A wise decision. The temperature was perfect, it was quiet with no street noise and only a quiet murmur from the other tables. A stark contrast to the atmosphere inside, which seemed to be as loud as any well-lubricated bistro. If you're looking for atmosphere, dine al fresco if at all possible. But dine at Chez Joel
