The Ultimate Dim Sum Guide

Having been a regular on this board for the past few years, I've come to realize that many people don't fully understand what to order at dim sum or the dim sum experience in general.

In order to help those Chowhounds who don't really understand, I've composed some lyrics to a song to help them. I've put in some American English phoneticizations. You sing these lyrics to the tune of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game". And it goes like this:

Take me out to eat dim sum
With the SGV crowd
Buy me some "fung jow" (鳳爪) and "cha siu bao" (叉燒包)
Man, those Cantonese really talk loud.

Don't forget to get "don tot" (蛋撻),
"ha gow" (蝦餃), "siu mai" (燒賣), too.
Order one, two, three at a time
'Cause it's good for you.

Disclaimer: This is for entertainment purposes only. In other words, if you actually sing it in a restaurant, everyone else will be entertained.

  1. Hahah! Love it. I think the second line of the second verse needs some extra syllables, no?

    "If they don't win it's a shame." (7 syllables)

"ha gow" (蝦餃), "siu mai" (燒賣), too. (5 syllables)

Or maybe you're putting beats in, pausing before each dish name.

    Here's an alternate second verse:

If you go to Sea Harbour,
    Respond with your preferred tea,
    Or they'll mutter in Cantonese
    some profanities!
