Food Network Star 7-1-12 [Spoilers]

Yes, finally. Show editing has shown us clips repeatedly that Malcolm "didn't need a POV" and now he's out.

Although Guy-Anne haired Michelle is also getting old, I think she'd do well on TV.

Final 3 predictions-- Justin, Ippy, Michele, although I'd Prefer Yvan for Ippy.

People I'd like to see dropped next week: Martita, Nikki, Martie.

  1. Was this post or pre Paula Dean sans 30 lbs?

I'm not sure there's 20k worth of stuff that I would want at Target.

      Targét sells Kitchen Aid.

7-1-12 broadcast of the Beached Deens episode; she still looks inflated, almos steroidial.

I hope that gift card doesn't expire, if it came down to it I suppose I could buy food with it for the next 30 years lol.

        1. re: ipsedixit

I said the same thing about Target and my husband said electronics. Flat panel TV for every room in the house. If Target had been smart, they would have given them four $5000 cards which would have made anyone happy AND gotten four times the air time.

          1. re: chowser

Ippy is from Hawaii. They love Spam there. 20k will buy a lot of spam. I also like the popcorn and an occasional Target dog in the deli.

        2. I was sad to see Malcolm go, I'd rather watch him than Michelle lumbering around. I felt like the food with soul thing was good enough but they obviously complained about it constantly. I too like Yvan. Surprised they picked 2 for elimination from the same team, and that Nikki was commended so much.

And I agree, that Target gift card didn't sound so thrilling. It'll last forever.

          1. I generally agree with your post regarding who is left. I'm not even sure why I'm watching anymore, other than there is nothing else on on Sunday. Out of who is left it's Justin and I suppose Yvan. The rest of them can't go fast enough for me. But can we finally get rid of Nikki. I can't stand her.

            1. Prediction: Justin will get his own show regardless of whether he wins. But he sure looks like a frontrunner.

I thought the same thing about Emily… Cooking will pick her up without wondering what kind of therapy she needs.
Justin, Alton, and Blais should do a show with Bill Nye or the Mythbysters. Ted Allen can host. "buli on the playground"

              2. $20,000 gift card to Target? Why? Oh, that's right, they're one of the sponsors...

They've got 7 contestants left, did anyone else hear Bob say "we're going to name the winner in 3 weeks", which means that if they hold true to form and have 3 finalists per usual, 4 people are going to go over the next 2 weeks. My guess is that someone from Giada's team goes next week (hopefully Martita, the 2 guys are both stronger than she is) in order to maintain the balance between "mentors". Then in the next week, someone from each team goes, revealing the final 3 contestants on which we get to vote.

So...if America get's to vote on who is the NFNS, does that mean they like the final 3 well enough to produce the 4-6 show comittment of the contract for each of them? The show is usually filmed in the early part of the year (Feb/March?) so that when the winner is selected, they've already filmed their contracted shows so that FTV can roll out the new show the week after the person wins.

I agree Justin does some interesting things with food, but, frankly, HE isn't interesting and if anyone is flat in presentation it's him.

Michelle was somewhat entertaining in her 2 episodes on Chopped but not so much on this show, and...I'm on the West Coast, My New England doesn't have much appeal to me.

I said it the first week Nikki is annoying...very annoying

Martita has had so many chances and blown it every time. Be done with it and send her home. If they want a show about Mexcian/latin cooking, let Aaron Sanchez do it. I'd watch a Mexican show with him cooking in a NY second.

Paul Deen nailed it, Yvan is adorable and very watchable. Whatever clicked for him last week was still there. He may be the dark horse in the Ippy vs. Justin race

I like Ippy from the beginning simply because he wasn't a characiture of all the contestants and seemed reasonally sane and down to earth. After 7 weeks I agree he probably does need to step up the energy a notch or two, but man, I'd eat his food in a heartbeat.

Which brings us to Martie, she doesn't annoy me the way she does most others. She actually makes me laugh. I know people like her and I see some of my own traits in her. I think her unabashed delight in meeting Paula was real. She does talk too much but, in her own way, she is as unaffected as Ippy. She won't win, but she's not nearly as annoying as Nikki or Martita and I'm not sure how well she can really cook

Last week I called the final 3 as - Justin, Ippy and Michelle
This week I'm calling the final 3 as Justin, Yvan and Nikki
                Next week? Who knows :-)

I watch it on tivo, so I just caught the part where viewers get to decide. I guess Bob's picker is broken so we might as well leave it up to the public. It can't be any worse.

The top folks will all find work.

I feel like they are are editing Ippy to get the fan vote, sort of an underdog thing. I think Ippy would be refreshing, as we already have soul, Mexican, etc.

I'm not really invested in any of them. I think producing-wise, Alton would be the best to produce their show. Bobby hasn't had a successful production, has he? I know he produced Alex's show.

                  1. re: Manassas64

The one thing about Martie - which may or may not make for a good show- is that she seems to use non-epicurean ingredients. That's great because her stuff wouldn't be too expensive to replicate, but how does that equate to what people want to watch for "party food"?

The more Martita I have to watch, the less I like her. She's not actually authentic Enough- I want more education. Of course, I'm Alton then Bobby then Giada in terms of preference anyway. Bobby has the strongest kitchen skills, but Alton teaches me more.

                    1. re: Kris in Beijing

I don't think we know what Martita can, or cannot, cook in terms of authentic Mexican. They spent so much time focuses on how much she freezes up that they almost never comment on her food and we almost never see her in the prep stage. At any rate, it really is time for her to exit stage left

                      1. re: Kris in Beijing

What can Martie do that Sandra Lee and Paula Deen don't already?

I feel the same way about Alton, Bobby and Giada.

                        1. re: Kris in Beijing

And FN already has Mexican Made Easy with Marcella something-or-other. I don't think FN needs another Mexican POV

                        2. re: Manassas64

                          He produces Kelsey Nixon's Essentials

                        3. re: DiningDiva

I don't like Martie. She is the type of person who WOULD love Paula Deen. Basic, simple, harmless, uninteresting, way too chatty. I like Ippy because he's who he is and won't change to please others; the same reason I don't like Nikki because she will become soft rose embellished girly girl because she thinks it's what they want. There's something disingenuous about her, plus I hate the "I'm the Grill Next Door." Sorry, you're not a grill.

I really like Yvan. There's something genuine about him, too. What I loved is the look of happy expectation on his face when they were announcing the winner of the Target gift card. He knew it was between the top three and he seemed so excited that it was probably his teammate, Ippy. He's like a little boy.

I'd watch a show about New England. I can't think of one, maybe Ina? I don't live there but there is good food in the area so I don't care that it's a different region--or I might like it better because it's a different region than I live in.

                          1. re: chowser

Oh, I don't disagree with you that Martie is basic, simple, harmless, uninteresting and w-a-y too chatty. She's all of those and, no, she doesn't bring anything new that Paula or Sandra Lee haven't already brought to the table. She just doesn't grate on me as much as, say, Nikki does. For me she is just very easy to tune out. Like the rest of them she's just pretty bland. If she makes the final 3 I'd be floored.

Realistically, the final 3 should be Ippy, Yvan and Justin. After last night they appear to be the 3 strongest competitors left. But I don't think the FN has the gumption to completely eliminate Bobby's team.

                            1. re: DiningDiva

Oh, it would be hard to say who grates on me more, Martie or Nikki.;-) Maybe Nikki. Nikki rubbed me the wrong way from the beginning and I still can't put my finger on why exactly.

                              1. re: chowser

I think you put your finger on it with Nikki upthread. She just seems very disingenuous. She's as phony as a $3 bill.

                                1. re: DiningDiva

Martie's southern charm, everybody's welcome in my house etc. does annoy and she does ramble on but Nikki is unbearable. She so annoying and her "charm" is so contrived. And that whole Girl on Grill/Grill Next Door thing makes me nauseous. Also, I don't want to be superficial or anything but something is disturbing about her face.

I know by watching this show, I give up the right to complain about shows that focus on storytelling, smiling and charm instead of cooking. However, I have to say, I really miss shows like David Rosengarten's Taste. It was probably my first food tv show obsession. I loved the new things I learned every week. Now I'm watching this show and trying not to cringe through the stilted presentations.
