Lox/smoked fish locations
My husband and I will be vacationing in Portland in August. Wondering if there are any great smoked fish places near downtown. Looking for a place that serves jewish appetizing style fish and accompaniments. We are happy to travel for the good stuff! Thanks.

The lox that Spielman's is selling (along with great bagels and fabulous coffee) is really delicious. Artisan made in CA, just the right amount of smoke, great flavor and texture.

I haven't had Flying Fish's smoked fish, so I can't comment on it. I have bought some great fresh fish from him, though. I didn't know he did cold-smoked fish.
I like the lox and bagels at Spielman's (2128 SE Division) better than the lox and bagels at Kenny & Zuke's. But that lox is all they have as far as smoked fish - no whitefish salad or herring salad, both of which you can get at K&Z's and which are good there. But I don't know where else you can get a great bagel and lox plate for $8.50 other than at Spielman's. I also buy their coffee beans, and they make a good cup of drip in-house as well as good espresso.
I like the cold-smoked salmon from the Smokery, but it's often just a touch more smoke than I am used to with lox. And there is no storefront, he just sells at the Farmers' Markets, I think.
I haven't been to the new Bowery Bagels either, and that could be another place to go...

We got some of Flying Fish's smoked salmon this weekend. Think it might be the best smoked salmon I've ever had. Nailed the balance between that deep smoky flavor and still being able to really taste the salmon. He's on Hawthorne and 20-something-th. Be aware if you do go that it's just a fish market (fish shack?) and not a restaurant or cafe.

Do you want takeout, store, or restaurant? For downtown restaurant or takeout, Kenny & Zuke's. Flying Fish is on the east side, close to downtown. At Portland Farmers Market Saturday morning at PSU, The Smokery.

The best places for smoked fish are Newmans inside City Market on NW 21st, and they will have lox and herring in cream sauce. http://www.newmansfish.com/
If you want to try PNW style smoked salmon, there is also Flying Fish company, where he smokes his own, and at the Saturday Farmers market, there are tribal fishmongers, who sell delicious smoked salmon, and another company who has delicious smoked fish, but I can't remember their name.
