From my two friends who live very close to Newport. I can't comment on any of the restaurants myself, never having been up that way.
"If they are looking for higher end, finer dining, head to Belvedere (in state building facing the water), Lago (across from state building) or head to Tastings. All three are our higher end restaurants. Apps are about $10 each and entrees about $20 each. Belvedere has sushi every Thursday night and tapas every night. Lago is Italian but not spaghetti meatball type. The rest of the restaurants will be cheaper with the Eastside (on the waterfront) being probably the most expensive but still a great price. For some great but nothing fancy food at a fantastic price head to Barton to the Candlepin or head to Westmore (where Lake Willoughby is) to the Taphouse. There are lots of pizza/sandwich joints, all which are good. Also in Derby is Vermont Pie and Pasta. I have heard good things about it but we haven't been yet. If you search for the names of those restaurants and include Vermont in the search, you should find each of their websites to view menus and prices as well as directions on how to get to each."
"On the higher end are Lago Trattoria and Le Belvedere in Newport and Tastings in North Troy. There is also The East Side (Newport), Habaneros for Mexican (Newport) and Juniors for burgers and pizza. Add in the usual array of pizza, Chinese and sub places and, really, Newport has a lot of food offerings."
