NOLA restaurant for small family birthday during our vacation

I am so excited to be taking my family to NOLA! I went there a lot as a child, because I had family living there at the time, but it's been years since I have been there. My husband will be running the marathon in February, which coincides with our daughter's 5th birthday. I know, that's a long way off, but I'm a planner and I enjoy thinking about it. We want to have just a small family party at a restaurant, but which restaurant? I want a place that will let us bring in our own Mardi Gras themed birthday cake, which I will get from a local NOLA bakery (bakery recommendations appreciated as well).

The restaurant doesn't have to be specifically a "kids' restaurant." We are foodies, and we are raising our kids to appreciate diverse foods, too.

Thanks so much! I can't wait to be back in New Orleans!

Where will you be staying? Will you have a car? What day of the week? Lunch or Dinner? How many people? What is your price range?

We will probably be staying in the Garden District, and we will have a car, so we aren't limited to walking distance. We will probably come in on a Thursday night and leave Monday morning. The birthday celebration can be lunch or dinner. It will be my family of 4, plus my aunt. Price doesn't matter.

My grandchildren love to go to Commander's for special occasions. Lunches there are quite nice and I am sure if you called ahead, they would OK the birthday cake. Sundays there is a Jazz Brunch. Are you coming for the marathon on Feb 24?

Yep, my husband is running it! Thanks, we might do Commander's. We went a long time ago, but I wasn't feeling well that evening, so we didn't get the full experience.

Not to dis Commanders, but if it were me, I'd head to Brigtsen's for my special occasion meal. Charming setting, warm service and arguably the best Modern Louisiana cuisine to be had. Only name restaurant where chef is in the kitchen every night they are open.
