Breakfast on the parkways

We drive up from Philly to Maine each summer, leaving at 5:00 am, and looking for breakfast after we cross the GW bridge and get on the parkways. We need breakfast! Is there any diner-type place near to the Merritt or Hutchinson Parkway? (No I-HOP, please!) What exit, how far from the exit?

Chips Family Restaurant, Orange CT. Famous for their pancakes. Don't let the line scare you as it moves fast. Worth a saunter off the parkway. Rte 15 N (Wilbur Cross Parkway), Just after you go over the Sikorsky Bridge in Stratford/Milford CT, Get off Exit 56 (Rte 121). At bottom of ramp stay straight onto Old Grassy Hill Road. At second stop sign, Turn Right onto Orange Center Road (Rte 152). Go 2 miles to bottom of hill and make a left on Boston Post Road/Route 1. 1 mile on left, just past Lambert Road. From the exit to the restaurant will take you about 5 minutes. http://chipsrestaurants.com/

Oh and then to hop back on 15, after you leave Chips, make a left on Route 1 to next major intersection and make a left onto Racebrook Road to Route 34, left on 34 and then 15 N.

Diners near the Merrit Parkway exits:

Stamford: Parkway Diner 1066 High Ridge Road,High Ridge Road Exit about 1 mile south on the right hand side of the street

Fairfield: Penny's Diner 2200 Black Rock Turnpike, Black Rock Tpt exit (44) about 2 miles south on the lefthand side of the street

Bridgeport: Galaxy Diner 4241 Main St, Bridgeport, Main Street Exit (48) about 1.5 miles south on righthand side of street

All of these are traditional 'Greek' owned and operated diners and qould have you eating breakfast before 8am based on leaving Philadelphia at 5 and no traffic problems.

Stamford is the most expensive of the three, Bridgeport has the best eggs (IMHO) and Penny's is the least clean.

Wilbur Cross Parkway (New Haven County name change on RT 15):

Next stop would be the Athenian Diner on Whalley Avenue in New Haven (exit 59), good eggs, clean and mid to upper prices, but it would be about 8:30 until you get there. A better choice one block closer to the exit would be Breugger's Bagels. Both about 3/4 mile south of the exit.

Townhouse Diner exit 61 in Hamden is very good and reasonably priced. On Whitnet Avenue directly across from exit (also 'Greek' owned)

Bagelman's detailed post reminded me of two other great places on Whalley Ave in New Haven, just South of Athenian Diner in Westville Village. . . (not diners, but more cafe style)

        Bella's Cafe - http://www.bellascafect.com/
        Lena's Cafe (closed on Tuesdays) - http://www.lenascafeandconfections.co...

Have to agree with Cheereeo on Bella's and Lena's they are on Whalley Ave about a mile from exit 59.

A bit further north (just south of Hartford) is the Town Line Diner in Rocky Hill. Not at all fancy, but quick, tasty, and very filling.
