I'm thinking nostalgically of brioche that I had in Sicily when I was little. Even though it's so long ago that I don't have a clear recollection of the nuances of taste, are there places with really fantastic brioche that you like, preferably not insanely expensive?
Levain bakery has plain, chocolate and cinnamon brioche, $2.75-3.50 (for large individual portions)
You might try Gian and Piero bakery in Astoria. You might call ahead and see if they have it. I buy briche with colored eggs baked in for my daughter there around Easter. They are really good. I think that the bakery are maybe Napolitani from their accents.
