Giffords World's Best Chocolate Ice Cream in Los Angeles?

  1. Not available out here as far as I know (and, in any case, there have been some really poor reviews of its taste on at least one of the perennial ice cream threads that regularly pop up here on the LA board). It seems that you'll have to head back to the Washington DC area if you want to sample it.

    1. I like the Ultra Chocolate sold in the freezer case at Trader Joe's for $3.99/qt. Very chocolate, great value.

+1 for Trader Joe's Ultra Chocolate which is made by Double Rainbow.

I don't know how Gifford's of maine ended up "world's best" except in their own minds, maybe? Did it win an actual award? (Oh well, Thrifty seems to keep winning ice cream awards, too, but I don't see why. It's okay as far as cheap airy ice creams go I guess).

Fosselman's (Alhambra) Dark Chocolate is well worth a trip, and some local Ralph's carry "Snoqualmie" Chocolate Ice Cream out of Seattle which is one of the best I've tried.

I saw a feature on the Food Network and the awards are from the World Dairy Expo and the National Ice Cream Retailers Association if that counts for much... I was just very curious because of my obsession with chocolate.... Thanks for the other suggestions as well! Here's the link if you want any more info on Giffords! And I like Thriftys ice cream too.... Remember the nickel cones... The good old days... You might be too young to remember!

You are right, getting cones dipped at Thrifty was great value for the cost, very nice ice cream. , I think Rite-Aid is the successor to Thrifty, I wonder if Rite-Aids still hand dip the Thrifty ice cream?

      2. High thee to Dr. Bob's for his dark chocolate ice cream. Rich, high butterfat, deep, dark chocolate and no chalky aftertaste.
