Best material for wooden implements?
I ruined one of my wooden spatulas and wanted to replace it. I seen many spoons and such made of bamboo, acacia wood, olive wood, and maple. The olive wood is the prettiest. Is it the best? Which of these woods will last the longest and still look good after many years of use and wear? I like the idea of taking care of wood and not replacing them all the time.
I have a few bamboo tools and love them. I've thrown them in the dishwasher with absolutely no ill effects. I've also read that bamboo does not absorb liquids as other woods do.
My other wooden spoons are just generic run of the mill whatevers, a couple of the bowls have warped or cracked... and I don't put them in the dishwasher.
I like bamboo as well. Lasts longer than wood, dishwasher is fine and you can get them cheap at asian stores.
FWIW, when a wood utensil of mine ist kaput, I've been replacing them with olivewood whenever I can, and none of these shows any sign of needing further replacement. But I hand-wash, and occasionally wipe the wood with mineral oil.
OTOH, the bamboo utensils I own never seem to fail, either... I once nearly severed a finger pulling on a threadlike bamboo filament, so it's not my fav.
Hawai'ian acacia, a/k/a koa, is beautiful but not advisable for food use--mildly toxic. I'm not sure all acacia is the same, though. My maple and birch stuff has lasted, but not like the olive or bamboo.
I have several pieces made of olive that have performed flawlessly for more than 40 years. Yes, I hand wash; wouldn't dream of putting them in the dishwasher. Some newer pieces, made by a friend, are cherry but they're mere infants of 5 or 6 years so I don't have a track record yet. When I have to choose, I go with olive, hands down. It has never failed.
I have olive wood cooking implements that I've used for more than 30 years. They've grown more beautiful with age. I've always handwashed them. But in the last year, two have broken. In both cases, house guests broke them, not me. No idea what they did differently than my own long time use to make them break, but wanted to mention it. I will be replacing them with more olive wood.
#1 bamboo -- tough, absolutely no maintenance, cheap
#2 olive wood -- prettier, occasional maintenance, expensive
birch, maple, cherry, and they never see the dishwasher. Olive IS interesting but not something my yard carries, or found in the woods near me
