Taco de Cochinita Pibil at Delicias Elenitas Truck (Santa Rosa)
The Delicias Elenitas truck permanently stationed in the parking lot of La Fondita in Santa Rosa’s Roseland District has been a quick and convenient meal stop. While not as consistently good in recent years, the ease of parking, fast service, and plentiful outdoor seating at picnic tables still makes it a draw. A few weeks ago a friend and I needed a fast stop near the freeway and Delicias Elenitas was the ticket.
Cochinita Pibil was a new addition to the list of meats. Tacos made with this Yucatec specialty come at a premium, $1.35 each. The achiote-stained, tender pulled pork was topped with a dice of fresh red onions (not pickled), no cilantro, and some orange-colored bits plus lime and radishes on the side. The fire in my mouth soon told me that the orange bits were habanero chile in a vinegar-y base. Too hot for me, but boy was it delicious.
I also ordered a Gordita filled with chicharrones en salsa, but this antojito was just okay. While the fried pork skin braised in red sauce was delectable, the gordita was odd. Much more browned and crunchy on the outside than typical, this seemed like a gordita that had been made much in advance then split in half and fried to a crisp. Not the delicate crust and creamy masa middle I like so much, but a greasier, thicker thing.
My friend had a carnitas super burrito, and he seemed happy with his choice.
