Fun restaurant for kids
My kids (ages 11 & 13) and I are going to be visiting DC in August. I'd like to find a fun restaurant for one of nights that will be there. They aren't picky about cuisine (will try almost anything) but I'd like to find something that will have a fun atmosphere. Any suggestions?

Ethiopian. You eat with your fingers. Go to Etete right near the U St/Cardozo Metro Stop. Get the vegetarian paltter, some derek tibs, and add fish to the platter for just a few bucks. A terrific meal.

I agree with Comet Ping Pong. And here are a few more: Five Guys Burger and Fries was born in D.C. - might be fun to go see the original. For chain themed you've got Hard Rock Cafe, Johnny Rockets, and Planet Hollywood but the food is just so-so at all three of them. Non-chain suggestions are The Grist Mill, Ella's Pizza, Elephant & Castle (a British pub), Jettie's for sandwiches, Commissary for a little bit of everything, including healthier, Surfside for tex-mex (owned by the same people as Jetties), Hill Country BBQ, and Carmine's for Italian.

Comet Ping Pong has pizza and ping pong tables, which might be fun for your family.
A more higher end, yet still moderately priced option, might be Central. Really good American bistro-style food. The owner/chef Michel Richard is one of DC's best chefs and this is his more affordable restaurant. He is very playful with his cuisine which could be fun in a less obvious way.
