Dinner "near" Eastgate Towers (Murray Hill)?

owen_meany Jun 26, 2012 11:00 AM

We'll be coming in from Boston for an all too brief weekend visit with our 6YO. I'm trying to figure out where to eat on Saturday night - early (6-ish). I'd like some place inventive enough to keep the parents interested but also someplace where DD can get something simpler. She's not picky per se but simple is better.

I'm looking at Riverpark but worried a bit that we'll be too casually dressed (clean and neat but not fancy). I also saw threads that suggested i trulli or maybe Da Ciro.

Thoughts on those or others?

I've been scouring threads so please know that I AM trying to do the investigative work on my own, too :-)

I love Riverpark and think it sounds like a good choice for your range of tastes. I've seen everything there from shorts, which I personally wouldn't do, to those more dressed up -- I don't think of it as especially formal or fancy. A well-behaved 6-year-old shouldn't be a problem early, but you can also eat on the patio, which serves both the dinner and bar menus (including grilled cheese, fried chicken, and burger) if you want more options.

Riverpark is fine, anyway you want to dress. The dressed up people in the day time and early eventing are mostly doctors ( I think). I've gone there dressed up and I've gone there in jeans. It is not a fancy place at all. Other options, someone mentioned Patsy's, totally not a fancy place and has decent pasta, salads, pizza. Theres a Philly Cheese steak place next to Patsy's,,, also a short walk to Curry Hill , you can try Anjappar ( south Indian food) , very child friendly and the your 6 year old will love the giant rolled nan. It looks like it's made for kids.

I just dont see riverpark with a 6 year old. Of course it depends on the kid but the menu just doesnt seem kid friendly.

Thanks everyone for the replies! The main menu at Riverpark isn't going to fly with my daughter but the bar menu with the grilled cheese, hamburger, etc. will. I made a reservation through OT so I don't know if that also covers the patio. I was contemplating calling them to find out if we could get a hamburger for her regardless of where we end up sitting. Maybe that's the right move to avoid awkwardness all around!

PS She is very well behaved so that part won't be an issue.

The fried chicken dish in the Bar Menu should also be child-friendly. They've accomodated my party, as well as people that I know who have also dined there, with the Bar menu regardless of dining hours and seating location.

Btw, you owe it to yourself, owen, to try the cheese empanadas and oyster tacos, both from the Bar menu.

:-) Consider it done! Both sound delicious.

                  Thanks for the feedback.

I think your idea of calling ahead is a good one, but they are exceedingly nice and I'm sure will accommodate your needs. Hope you love it!

Thanks again everyone for the input! We returned from our quick trip to NYC yesterday. We had a wonderful time! Can't wait to go back.

We ended up at Blue Smoke on Friday night. As soon as we walked in my husband and I both remembered at the same time that we had eaten there pre-kid a bunch of years ago. We enjoyed it very much then and very much on Friday! H had the ribs, dd had mac and cheese w/mashed potatoes and I had the veggie burger. Everyone was pleased with their meal. A couple of beers were enjoyed as well and we had chocolate cake for dessert. It's described on the menu as "the best you've ever had" which it was not BUT it was still quite good (I like a lot more frosting on my cake!). They were terrific with my daughter as it seems as though they really welcome and enjoy kids.

Saturday night we went to Riverpark. The setting was beautiful after a hot day of walking! We sat outside - among the first people there at 6:15. DD had the burger which H declared "one of the top 5 burgers" he's eaten. Can't remember what H started with but he had the gnocchi which were very tasty. I had the oyster taco to start (yum) and then had a salad and the mushroom consomme for dinner. The soup was absolutely amazing. My only disappointment was the desserts...I had the caramel and peanut tart and I guess I'm one of those people that prefers their sweets just sweet not savory but the smoky flavor was really off-putting. It was described clearly on the menu so my fault for not taking them at their word.

Service was a wee bit clunky but fine and they were fine with my daughter. The people who were seated (after us) next to us had a moment of hesitation upon seeing her but since she's more quiet than your average dining companion, all was well :-) .

Thank you again for all of your help!

Great report. We like Blue Smoke too. You've convinced us to check out Riverpark.
