Rye bagels in NYC?
they're my bagel of choice as well, and it is hard to find an even passable one.
but i really like the ones at times square hot bagels -- especially if you get them near the morning rush, when there's a chance at grabbing a warm one. all their bagels have a nice chew, free from the kaiser-roll fluffiness that seems so prevalent these days, and the rye always have a good coating of caraway.
for what it's worth, they also do a nice salt bagel.
Times Square Hot Bagels is alleged to have rye bagels. I, too, lament the rarity of the rye bagel - it should be a natural for this town. Times Sq Hot Bagels is at 200 W. 44th St. (between 7th and 8th Aves). Phone: (212) 997-7300. I have not been there but will go soon. Please update us all if you go and try the rye bagels.
I agree that they are delicious and hard to find. Unfortunately the only place that had them that I know of closed. It was the Bagelry on Lexington Ave and 88th St. They are out there but as you say elusive. Let us know if you find any. It's not in Manhattan but there is a bagel place in Bay Terrace in the Baybridge Shopping Center that has rye bagels and the bagels are excellent, not the puffy bagel wannabes you now find in Manhattan. The name of this place is Bagel Club.
