The Hog / Pompano

I ventured to The Hog in Pompano early Friday evening after reading about this establishment here on ChowHound. The sign out front says they serve real BBQ and the inside of the restaurant was well-appointed to play the part.

I ordered the "BBQ Trough" which is there version of a BBQ platter. It had chopped pork (not pulled), brisket, smoked turkey, sausage and two sides. I asked to replace the smoked turkey with ribs and they were fine with that. For my two sides I went with collard greens and cole slaw.

Sine the "meat is the thing" at any BBQ restaurant that claims to serve real BBQ we'll start there. The chopped pork really didn't look smoked but it was tender and had good taste. The brisket was cut thinly and chopped but wasn't sliced as it should be. Like the pork, it didn't look or smell like it came out of a smoker but it did have rather good (but not great) taste. And then on to the ribs - - I knew things weren't going well with them as they left the back skin on the underside of the ribs and that's BBQ 101 - - remove the skin. I can't say that they ever saw the inside of a smoker but these had spent some time in an over. These were funky and wet and beyond the outside were rather tasteless. These baby backs were very disappointing. The chopped pork and the brisket were much better and that's not saying all that much. The sausage wasn't very big but it was smoky, savory and flavorful. It was the best part where the meat was concerned.

Let's go to the sides - - cole slaw and collards. The cole slaw was crisp and tasty. The collard greens were absolutely outstanding and the hilight of the meal (and that's sad considering that you go to a BBQ restaurant for MEAT!).

Another issue is serving size. I didn't bring a scale with me but prepared BBQ is between $8.50 and $10 per pound. My combo platter was $17.95 and the there should have been considerably more meat than I was served.

The service was excellent and with tip my bill was $26 and change. My server asked what I thought and I conveyed all of these thoughts presented here and she listened intently. I told her it says that you folks serve "real bbq" but I didn't taste much in the way of real smoked meat and she told me that they do have a smoker but the city doesn't allow them to do much.

This wasn't a horrible experience and I'm sure that this place has a nice chopped pork sandwich and that would probably be a better place to start. They had their own BBQ sauce which by itself didn't taste that great but on the meat was much better.

I was hopeful that this place would be a BBQ mecca of sorts but sadly it fell well short of those lofty expectations. The sign said they serve "real BBQ" and that's clearly not the case here - - it's not real. I wouldn't mind returning for an inexpensive BBQ sandwich and some collard greens but that would be about it.

So are they constrained by some sort of smoke ordinance like in Boca? I think it states that any business can be fined if smoke from the restaurant or business is deemed a "nuisance" to those nearby.

How do you invest the capital to open a restaurant without doing the due diligence to recognize that local ordinances might negatively affect your success? I think I'd ask for a refund from the lawyer who told me, "Don't worry, everything's okay. Save me some barbeque!"

It would seem that they are constrained - - at least that's what the server indicated.

Please believe that I was hoping this establishment really did serve "real bbq" and I was looking forward to writing a more positive review. The interior was well-appointed, they have live music on weekends and everything seemed in place until the food arrived. This place wasn't horrible like "Rib Biz" in Boca was.

On the upside, you were walking distance to Cafe La Buca and Calypso
