Maybe some gunk has gotten into the hole in the beater. Try a small screwdriver to scrape the sides of the hole, and also clean the mixer's shaft well - the beater, dough hook, and whisk may not have precisely the same diameter of hole.
If worst comes to worst, replacing the beater is cheap, $15 from Kitchenaid and from at least one store I know of.

Are taking about the beater or dough hook? Is the shaft hole smooth and free of debris and burrs?

When you look at the "hole" in the beater that connects to the shaft on the mixer, is it worn? As I think about it some more, the shaft hole in the beater must have a problem with a burr, debris, or it is worn where the shape has changed.
Will this beater fit other mixers? Will other mixers beaters fit yours? Does your dough hook have any problems?
It is possible the plunger on the mixer shaft has an issue but, since your wire whisk works fine I'm ruling that out.
