Had an absolutely sensational dinner at The Modern on Tuesday. There were 4 of us, and everything was perfect. I'd highly recommend it. We were in the inside room facing the courtyard. The noise level was very low too, thank goodness. One of my favorite meals in my 30 years in New York.
I went for dinner last month. I adored the Rabbit terrine and the Caramel parfait, they were eye-opening. Lobster/vegetables was solid, but not mind-blowing, and the presentation was kinda messy (I don't mean to be harsh, it's just how I feel). I didn't really connect with the much lauded Caviar tart—it was salty, and I was definitely not expecting a piece of tuna ham to dominate under the foam; I appreciate the overall concept i.e. the miniaturized layerings in the tart, but the taste wasn't there for whatever reason. Still, I'd go again for lunch sometime.
I agree: The Modern is wonderful. Other than the 4-5 top restaurants in NY (Daniel, Jean Georges, EMP, Le Bernardin and, for me, Babbo), The Modern is probably my favorite restaurant in the next tier. Unique food; unique room; warm, friendly service; good for a special night. I would have put Alto (underrated IMHO) in this category too before it closed.
