Differences in different brands of whole oats?
I make granola & oatmeal with old fashioned oats and was wondering if there's really a difference (besides price) between say the Walmart Great Value brand verses Quaker verses other brands? The walmart ones are about 50% cheaper but is there any real difference? Nutritionally speaking? Taste difference?
I too get my oats from bulk bins, either health food store or regular grocery (sometimes in its 'natural foods' section). Haven't bought name brand in a long time.
Oats come in a variety of shapes. As far as I know all are equally 'whole' - in the sense that the bran and germ are not separate out (but I may be wrong on that).
oat groats - whole grains
cut oats - groats cut into pieces
scottish oats - a coarse meal (I also make this by whizzing rolled oats in a spice mill)
rolled oats - groats are steamed and then rolled to form flakes. In a large health foods store I've seen these in regular, thick and extra thick. They also sell glutten free - oats grown and selected to be free of an stray wheat. Instant or quick oats are rolled extra thin.
