Banh mi at Pho #1 in Fresno?
We are driving from San Francisco to Kings Canyon on Sunday morning and were thinking about stopping in Fresno for Banh mi. We will need a stop to get out of the car, as we are travelling with our 4 year old daughter. We will be hitting Fresno pretty early and it looks like this place is open at 7:30. Any reports on their sandwiches? Alternatively, May's Cafe gets pretty good reviews, but I can't tell how early they open. Any input on May's?
We ended up going to Pho #1 for the sandwiches. At 8am on a Sunday morning they were already pretty busy. We ordered a BBQ chicken, a BBQ pork and a combination. While the flavors on all three were good, the sandwiches were dry dry dry because the bread was so big. These were not the delicate rolls I am used to for Banh mi. Oh well. We doctored them up with a little mayo, and finished them off. It was hard to walk out and not get a bowl of pho, as it looked and smelled really good. And the prices for the pho were much cheaper than we are used to in SF. So definately not a destination place, but it filled the hole and was open early.
Did a banh mi crawl a few years back and ended up with this favorite:
1848 North 1st Street Fresno, CA 93703
I order the #21 (iirc) BBQ pork with extra meat and cilantro which boosts the price to around $5.50 or so. The bread is great, I just try to avoid the extra carbs.
