Exotic and wild mushrooms

Hughlipton Jun 19, 2012 07:59 AM

There used to b e a fellow who sold them at the Hollywood Farmer's Market on I believe, Sundays. Does anyone know if he is still there? Or can you acquire them online or at other venues. Thanks for the help.

He's still there, and he's usually at the Santa Monica Wed and Sat markets, I believe. I like him better than the LA Funghi people, who I just can't bring myself to buy from.

The guy at the SM farmers market is very knowledgeable, friendly and willing to chat. Quality is usually very good as well. Often though he has only few varieties out whereas LaFunghi (Culver city on tuesday) has a bigger selection

Just out of curiosity, why? After all, their mushrooms are "proudly featured on Chowhound"!

For one thing, based on their availability (i.e., having such a variety, even when certain types aren't in season), and the fact that they're located in the certified section of the farmers market, I'm assuming their mushrooms are all cultivated (vs. wild). Their site doesn't say much about where the mushrooms come from, so I'm curious if anyone has any special insight.

Also, the other guy has been around forever, so I don't like to see them cutting into his business.

the mini shitake's at LA Funghi are cute though ;) I have to say the guy in SM has had some really nice local Ca/Or truffles the last couple of years.
