birthday dinner in the valley

I am looking for somewhere to take a friend who is somewhat a foodie for their 24th birthday dinner. Not too picky with cuisine but nothing too extreme. Nice but not super expensive (we are only 24 after all!) Just somewhere with some culture or cool atmosphere. Preferably Studio City, Burbank, Toluca Lake, Sherman Oaks...that area! I know this is broad but I am just stuck and as many great places as we know, we're looking for somewhere new to try! Thanks :)

I really liked the food and staff at Ombra in Studio City.

Another vote for Ombra. Best Italian in Valley, I think! Or, if you don't mind someplace very casual & rather quiet, you might try Natas (Ventura & Fulton); delicious Portuguese food that you're unlikely to find anywhere else in city (and irresistible desserts, perfect for a birthday).
One other thought: Mantee in Studio City. Delicious, distinctive Armenian/Lebanese food w/ a very charming patio in back, great for this time of year. You might want to check on wine/beer policy; you used to be able to BYOB, but then could not while they were trying to get license--I haven't been back in awhile so don't know if they got license finally or are once again allowing BYOB.

Mantee received its beer & wine license late October 2011. Bring on the wine!

Great! Time for me to take my own advice & enjoy their summer patio dining.(w/ wine).

There are some great Thai restaurants over in the NoHo area. I like Amazing Thai, but there are some other excellent choices too.
