Not too far off the green - just past the hospital is a strip mall containing Olive Tree (gyros, salads, falafel) and Papas Pizza - pretty good pizza. Across the street from the strip mall is Mr. Mac's Canteen - burgers, dogs, sandwiches.

re: harrie
Actually the lunch was today, and we did end up at Jeffries. Got there at 11:45 and no one was there, but by the time we left at 1:10 thee was quite a few people there. and there was a birthday party for 20. Have not been there in a long time. Looks like they remodeled since the last time I was there. Everyone was satisifed with their lunch, we were five. Thanks again for the suggestions. Will try some of the places you suggested soon.

re: razkel
I don't know being "satisfied" doesn't sound like a ringing endorsement. At there years ago and was so surprised by the high, New York prices. I ordered the pasta marinara because I was being treated and it was the cheapest entree. Yuk, metallic, inedible. Others at the table seemed pleased but I would spend my money elsewhere. Wish I could recommend a place downtown. I like Bistro Basque, but it is just too loud, can't talk there. The food is quite good for Milford, David the owner knows what he is doing. But the food never changes and is starting to feel a bit stale to me after eating there many times. You can get a decent falafel at Olive Tree. It's too bad that space is empty across from the harbor that was a bakery kind of place with a patio. Great space, but looks like a cheap cafeteria.

We loved that little place, too, and got breakfast there on Sunday mornings several times. Excellent homemade baked goods, and cared about food in general, with super- friendly service. The parking absolutely sucks, though, and there is virtually no walk- by traffic, save for when I walk my classes by. I imagine that rent doesn't come cheap, either.

I haven't been to Jeffrey's in quite a while (a year or so?), but the food was very good last time I was there.
If you want by the green, there are many options.
Stonebridge - also pricey, food's standard but pretty good http://www.stonebridgerestaurant.com/menus/lunchmenu.pdf
Rainbow Gardens - if you can get past the cutesy menu, the food's okay http://www.rainbowgardens.org/diningroom.html
Taste of Thai - highly thought of on this board, I've been there twice and really liked it http://www.tasteofthaimilford.com/Menu/menu.html
Liquid Lunch - I'm not a fan, but they do a good business - soups, sandwiches, salads http://liquidlunchct.homestead.com/dailymenu.htmlDowntown also has an SBC and an Archie Moore's.
There's also the Got Chef truck by the train station; but it's take out. Delicious take out, but nowhere to sit unless you find an open bench on the green, which isn't that hard to do. http://www.gotchef.com/

Yes, if you walk towards the harbor from Scoopy Doo's (straight away from the window if you turn around after ordering), there are tables there. Or, you can cross the footbridge, and walk down to the boat ramp- there are tables there as well. If you have a Milford taxpayer sticker, you can park your car at the boat ramp by going through the Library parking lot, and turning left after the Pavilion. Both are nice- and usually surprisingly quiet- picnic spots.
